Tawe Trekkers Newsletter - 2nd June 2009

Llyn y Fan Fach from Llandeusant - Sun 7th Jun

On Sunday Emyr and Caroline will be leading us up Carmarthen Fan (don't be fooled by the name, it's nowhere near Carmarthen), from the western side. The first half of the walk includes some steep ascents up to the spectacular, elevated viewpoints of Fan Foel summit. The scenery on this walk is amongst the best in the whole of the Brecon Beacons.

Difficulty: Moderate/Strenuous

Distance: 10 Miles

Meeting Points/Times: 0930 at County Hall or 1045 at the walk start point near Llandeusant.

As always, please contact the walk leader if you are going to be meeting at the walk start point.

A note on directions to the start point: If possible follow up in convoy from County Hall. If you are going to try and find it yourself (or lose the convoy), then get on the A4069 from Brynamman and then follow it about 15km north. At Pont Newydd take a right and follow the country lanes to Llandeusant (if you miss the Pont Newydd turning then you can take another right approx. 2km further up the road at Pont-ar-Llechau). When you get to Llandeusant continue west (look out for a small old wooden sign for Llyn y Fan). Eventually the road turns into an unsurfaced track, continue along this until you come to the foot of the range and parking spaces next to a river. Grid ref 798238. It will help you to look at the OS map (OL12) in finding the start point if you have one.

Call Emyr on 07846879210 for details.

Messing about on a boat...Tawe Trekkers Trip to Ilfracombe (Devon) on The Waverley

Tom is organising something a bit different that may appeal to a few of the sea dogs amongst us; see details from Tom below:

Sunday 14th June 2009. Swansea Ferry Terminal, SA1. Cost: £27 (£25 cons)

Contact: Tom Jack Mob: 07980 477 164

Departure: Assemble at 10.50am for an 11.15am sailing.
Return: 9pm. Travel time, 2 hours each way.
Boat: Waverley, Glasgow-Built, it’s the world’s only remaining ocean going paddle steamer.
Why go? Stunning views of Exmoor, Lundy and Gower coastline. Victorian seaside town with renowned Annual “Victorian Fayre” scheduled. Option of Beautiful 6 mile stroll along spectacular cliff tops of North Devon Coast on the “Tarka Trail”. Devonshire Cream tea and Local cider consumption prior to trip home , leaving Devon at 7pm.

As this charter rarely sails from Swansea, take advantage of this opportunity and reserve a place by sending a cheque made out to: Thomas Jack for £27 ASAP to: “Churchfields”, 6 Rectory Court, Llanmaes, Vale of Glamorgan, CF61 2WJ. You can also just turn up on the day, but given popularity, there may not be spaces on board ship.

That's it for this week, look out for the new programme which will appear shortly on the website, and a reminder that it's also the regular pub night at the Brunswick this Thursday (11th June) from about 8 onwards.

Cheers,

Doug
