Tawe Trekkers Newsletter - 29th June 2009

Again, there's a lot of stuff in this week's newsletter including two walks and a bike ride. There's also a bit of news concerning the Rambler's Association that is worth mentioning here; the organisation is in financial difficulties and making significant staff cuts.
Graham went along to the Glamorgan Area Council meeting last week to find out what was going on, and his summary is included below. If you'd like to find out more and how it may affect us as a Group and as walkers please get in touch with Graham or Doug. First though, let's start with this week's walks...

_____________________________

Mumbles Head Evening Walk - Thursday 2nd July

Thursday evening's walk takes in countryside and coast with a smattering of military history and architecture. There'll be some fine views of Swansea Bay as in the last evening walk but from a totally different angle.

After a steep but short climb to Mumbles Hill Nature Reserve we'll see some remnants from the Second World War. Further on the walk we get the chance to view Catherine Zeta-Jones new house and discuss its grand design. Near here we get fine views across the Bristol Channel towards Ilfracombe.

The walk ends at Salt (or The George as it used to be known) and if you can't make the walk hopefully you can join us on the upstairs balcony from 9 pm (or inside if wet!).

Meeting place is Southend Boat car park (opposite Salt) which is a little further down Mumbles Road from Southend car park. Grid reference: SS 622877.

See you at 7.30 pm.

Phone 07981 963 681 for further details.

Mynydd Margam and Margam Country Park - Saturday 4th July

South Wales has many fine country parks and Margam is no exception. Margam Park is an 850 acre estate on the southern slopes of Mynydd Margam. This rich landscape has a rich history to match; an abbey was built in the 12th Century and then razed by Henry VIII in the Disolution. Margam 'Castle' was built in the 19th Century as a stately mansion. Tom's walk offers a chance to explore the history and landscape of Margam Park and beyond.

The route starts off steeply up a wooded hill past old abbey church then walk along a ridgeway. It continues through Forestry Commision wood to the summit of Mynydd Margam to follow the Coed Morganwg way eastwards and finally descends back through the deer park back to start.

Difficulty: Moderate

Distance: 8 Miles

Meeting Points: County Hall at 0930 or the walk start point (which is the information point by Margam Stones and near Margam Abbey) at 1000. If you plan to go straight to the start point please let Tom know.

For more details on the route and meeting place please call Tom on 07980477164.

Credit crunch strikes the Ramblers Association

Along with many other voluntary sector organisations the Ramblers Association nationally has been hit hard by the current economic downturn. As a result major cuts in budget and staffing are being applied and the view in Scotland and Wales is that the the axe is falling far too freely in the Regions. There was a lively discussion of the issue on friday night at the well-attended Glamorgan Area Council meeting.

Due to the Credit Crunch Ramblers memberships are dropping and there have been falls in income from sales and donations too. This has left a budgetary deficit of £1.5 Million out of a total budget of £ 6 Million for the Ramblers nationally. The solution formulated by Central Office in London is major cuts in staffing. The budget for the Wales Office is being cut from £300,000 to just £80,000 with 6 out of 8 core posts being lost. The remaining two core staff (Senior Development & Promotions Officer and Rights of Way Officer) will work from home as the office in Cardiff is being closed. The first redundancies will take place next friday.

Although there will be cuts in staffing in London also, the feeling of the meeting was that Wales and Scotland were being disproportionately pruned and that the measures had been applied in undue haste and without proper consideration or consultation. It is probably now too late to avert the cuts but the meeting formally resolved to send a strongly worded letter to the Chief Executive and Trustees condemning the action that had been taken and highlighting the damage that would be done to the Ramblers in Wales - loss of reputation, loss of voice with the Assembly Goverment, loss of fundraising opportunities and opportunities for partnership working. The promotion of walking in Wales with it's attendant health benefits and the maintenance and enhancement of the the footpath network would suffer as a consequence.

The move is a stark reversal of recent progress in devolving more resources and authority to the Scottish and Welsh Offices. There is talk of UDI in some quarters especially amongst the unruly Scots!

Cheers,

Graham

Gower Walk with the Tiger Bay Ramblers - Sun 21st June

Our friends from the Big Apple (Cardiff) will be leading a walk from Oxwich on Sunday 21st June, and while they're in the Wild West (of Wales) they'll be inviting the local cowboys (that'll be us!), on their little adventure. Carys from TBR has sent us some details:

Start of Walk: 10.30am Oxwich Bay car park. (£3.50 per car for parking)

Difficulty: Moderate 8 miles

We will then descend and be able to see 3 Cliffs Bay, Tor Bay the length of Oxwich Bay. The path then gets narrow and steep in places, so we will take our time then stop off at Nicholston Farm for ice creams, snacks, etc. Following that we will head through the sand dunes and onto Oxwich Bay, where we can paddle or walk along the sand along the length of the beach and back to the car park.

Walk Leader: Carys 07812 610260 (will be at the TT meeting place)

Caroline's sponsored silence - Sunday 21st June

My friend Marie has lost her fight against cancer and, at the age of 35, been given just 9-18 months to live. I am looking to raise a small sum of money so that her two young children can enjoy some memorable days out with their mother before she is gone.

I played with and dismissed various schemes, such as climbing Kilimanjaro (passé) or jumping out of a plane (doddle). But I know you’ll all appreciate that my greatest personal challenge is… to not talk for a WHOLE HOUR - maybe even more, if I haven’t already imploded with unspoken wit and wisdom.

I will undertake this during the Tawe Trekkers walk on Sunday 21st June. So please come along and witness this feat and if I succeed any donations would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

Caroline.

Llyn y Fan Fach from Llandeusant - Sun 7th Jun

On Sunday Emyr and Caroline will be leading us up Carmarthen Fan (don't be fooled by the name, it's nowhere near Carmarthen), from the western side. The first half of the walk includes some steep ascents up to the spectacular, elevated viewpoints of Fan Foel summit. The scenery on this walk is amongst the best in the whole of the Brecon Beacons.

Difficulty: Moderate/Strenuous

Distance: 10 Miles

Meeting Points/Times: 0930 at County Hall or 1045 at the walk start point near Llandeusant.

As always, please contact the walk leader if you are going to be meeting at the walk start point.

A note on directions to the start point: If possible follow up in convoy from County Hall. If you are going to try and find it yourself (or lose the convoy), then get on the A4069 from Brynamman and then follow it about 15km north. At Pont Newydd take a right and follow the country lanes to Llandeusant (if you miss the Pont Newydd turning then you can take another right approx. 2km further up the road at Pont-ar-Llechau). When you get to Llandeusant continue west (look out for a small old wooden sign for Llyn y Fan). Eventually the road turns into an unsurfaced track, continue along this until you come to the foot of the range and parking spaces next to a river. Grid ref 798238. It will help you to look at the OS map (OL12) in finding the start point if you have one.

Call Emyr on 07846879210 for details.

Tawe Trekkers Newsletter - 25th May 2009

Hi everyone

This week's newsletter is another packed edition so here we go:
_______________________________

Kilvey Hill - Evening Walk - Thursday 28th May

If you have never seen the views from the top of Kilvey Hill then this walk is a MUST for you. We’re meeting near the Ship Inn at 7.30 pm on Thursday 28th May. The Ship is at 98-99 Pentreguinea Rd, St Thomas SA1 8DJ; it's a little north of Fabian Way almost on the bank of the Tawe. Parking is available by the row of shops next to Swansea Dockers Club; alternatively there is plenty of parking in the nearby streets.

We’ll walk along the Tawe and then ascend Kilvey Hill from the North before returning to the Ship at about 9ish when, if you can’t make the walk, you’ll be welcome to join us. If the weather stays dry then proper walking sandals will be okay – but don’t blame me if you twist your ankle; if wet there will be a few muddy bits to negotiate.

Hope to see you – any questions contact me on 07981 963 681.

We can then round the walk off with a refreshment and food, for those who want it, at The Beaufort Arms. Portable dogs are welcome.

Time: Meet 10.30am at County Hall, 11.00am at the start point.

Newsletter - Vale of Ewyas walk - Sat 23rd May

Hi everyone,

A few things to mention in this weeks newsletter!

1. Pam is arranging a boat trip around the Gower on the Sea Serpent on Saturday 27th June at 1.30pm. Cost approximately £23 per person. A great oportunity to explore Gower wildlife and views of the coastline from the water. If you're interested and want more details please call Pam on 07967 466690 asap.

2. Another propsoed boat trip comes from Tom. His plans are to take the "Waverley" (the last ocean going steam paddle steamer in the world) from Swansea to Ilfracombe on Sunday 14th June and then take a short walk along to the mullacott valley before heading home! The cost for this trip is £27 per person. Apparently the Waverley is only in Swansea for limited time so perhaps not an opportunity to be missed?!
If you're interested and want more details please call Tom.J on 07980 477164 asap

3. Summer 2009 Tawe Trekkers Programme - thanks to everyone who's offered to lead a walk on the next programme. Once again we've a variety of walks and locations coming up. Please can leaders let me have details of their walk (if they haven't already) by the end of this week to ensure the new programme is available asap! Thank you

4. And last but not least here's the details of Toms walk in the Vale of Ewyas in the Black mountains on Sat 23rd May. Please note the earlier start time due to the distance to travel, but it's definately worth the longer car journey!

Walk description: From the village take farm tracks and zig zagging back up onto offas dyke trail, an ancient country-long earthwork built by an Anglo saxon king. Then, follow this northwards to the prominent top of Hay bluff and views from black mountains escarpment, then descend to Gospel pass and re-ascend to Lord herefords Knob, the second of the day's summits. Progress along stunning cliff edge to Rhos Dirion, the highest point of the walk with a majestic trig point, and then descend southwards on way back over the western arm of the enclosing glacial valley and descend down the valley side back to Capel y Ffin.Option afterwards, time allowing to visit the augustinian prioy ruins at Llanthony and to sojourn at the pub IN the abbey, the undercroft has been converted into an amazing pub.
Grade: Strenuous. Ascent: 2500ft Terrain: Moorland, farm tracks, sheep pasture, peaty mountainside.
Start point and time: 9.00am from Swansea hall car park or 10.30am from the few gravel car parking places at Capel y Ffin, a village with two chapels 3 miles North of Llanthony Abbey in the vale of Ewyas.
Directions: This valley is off the A465, a few miles NE of Abergaveny in Monmouthshire (best reached along heads of the valleys road via vale of Neath from Swansea, or M4, A40 for all other routes).
Parking:If there are no places when you arrive at Capel y Ffin, take a small road to the left as you enter the village and travel 700 metres up a slight hill to parking areas at a Monastery or at the nearby Stables, and walk down to assembly point in the village near the red telephone box. Grid ref: S0 252 314. Os map Explored OL13 Distance: 12 miles.
Dog friendly? Yes..only a few stiles, mainly gates to negotiate.

The location is spectacular, do not forget your camera. This is one of my favourate valleys in Wales and the UK. The route is a classic and one of the finest mountain walks in Wales...and is well worth the slightly longer than usual drive. The fewer cars the better due to limited parking options on a bank holiday weekend. Beware of driving north up the valley, narrow and twisty with blind bends.
If you have any questions or plan to go straight to the start point please call
Tom J on: 07980 477164

Think thats it for this week! Any other queries please call me on 0780 726441

Tintern Abbey, Brockweir and the Devils Pulpit - Sat 2nd May

A longer than usual drive but well worth it!

Start point: 9.30am at Swansea town hall car park or 11.00am at Tintern Abbey CADW car park, or for free parking at the large car park opposite the police station in Tintern or indeed anywhere in Tintern. Therefore, I propose we congregate at the entrance to Tintern Abbey.
Start point assembly point Grid RefL OL 14 Map, Wye valley: ST 532 001.

Length: 9.5 miles.

Ascent: Moderate and gradual, 600 ft.

Grade: Moderate.

Dog friendly: Only a few stiles, so Dogs are welcome.

Walk description: Walk consists of mixed terrain, riverside paths (can occasionally be muddy), mature oak woodland, a step-ish rise up limestone valley side and a walk back through woodland and meadow-lands.
The route proceeds through Tintern and along a beautiful meander of the river Wye at which point we cross the bridge to the picture postcard village of Brockweir and enter England. We then proceed on the low level route of Offas’s Dyke path, following the river North for a few miles before rising gradually up an old cart track through gnarled and ancient oak woodland to reach the plateau above the valley. At this point we reach the ancient earthworks of Offa’s Dyke itself and follow it south over St Briavels common and down a little side valley, rising up the other side and entering the delectable Caswell woods. We then proceed along the cliff top edge with excellent views all along from Wye valley and along to the stunning and famous viewpoint of Devils pulpit. A gradual descent to Black Morgan’s wood then leads back onto the riverside path along the river Wye and an easy walk back to the footbridge which when crossed leads directly back into the village of Tintern.

Points of Interest: For those not keen on the full-length walk, Tintern can be a stimulating day excursion in itself. The Abbey was the last to be destroyed by Henry VIII and was the largest abbey of its order in the U.K. and is one of the best preserved Tintern itself has a range of “Hay on Wye” style bookshops and a Vineyard you can visit, a heritage railway station and a range of shorter riverside rambles – so plenty of walk options or wet weather alternatives! The village has several pubs, including one inside the old abbey mill itself, and the walk covers a long stretch of Offa’s dyke, a prominent ancient earthwork erected by King Offa, a Saxon king of Mercia to keep the marauding Welsh out.

Contact: Tom J on 07980477164 if you are planning to meet at the start point in Tintern, or for more details.

Llyn Llech Owen and Carmel Woods - Sunday 26th April

Graham leads this week's walk which connects Llyn Llech Owen Country Park with Carmel Woods via some little known backwaters of Carmarthenshire.

Points of interest: Llyn Llech Owen Country Park. Carmel Woods National Nature Reserve famously saved from becoming a big hole in the ground in the 1990s. Carboniferous geology - contrast between landscape underlain by sandstone and that underlain by limestone. Legacy of the quarrying industry. Possibility of inaugural kite-feeding at Country Park and nice friendly cafe offering discounts to ramblers!

Distance: 6 Miles

Difficulty: Moderate.

The route is mainly flat or gently undulating but there are areas where the ground is uneven and muddy. Good boots are essential and gaiters and waterproof trousers would be a benefit. Accessible for small portable dogs only, as there are a few stiles.

Meet Points: 09:30 at County Hall East Car Park

or

10:15 at Llyn Llech Owen Car Park (SN565149). Leave the A48 at Crosshands heading North on the A476. Take the second left at Gorslas and follow the signs to Llyn Llech Owen.

Contact: Graham on 07770 435341.

Change of Walk - Sunday 5th April - Felindre

Emyr's changed his planned walk on the 5th from Caerfanell to Felindre. On consideration Emyr thought that it was too far for people to drive all the way up there so he's now going to be leading a more local walk. The walk will start from the carpark by Felindre Reservoir and follow a route around the surrounding hills and countryside. Here's the details:

Distance: 5 miles

Difficulty: Easy

Meeting: 0930 at County Hall or 1000 at the carpark by Felindre reservoir.

Contact: Emyr on 07846879210 for more details or directions.

Alternative to Walk: Mountain Biking at Afan Forest - Sunday 5th April

Let the pedals take the strain for a change as we take on the Rheilffordd track in the Afan Forest. The route is between 10-14 miles long and consists of maily gravel tracks with only a couple of modest gradients (call it mountain biking lite!). You can hire bikes from Skyline cycles at the Afan Forest Centre for £15 for half a day's hire.

If you would like to go please text Christian on 07791089942 by Thursday and also indicate if you need to hire a bike.

We will meet at County Hall at 12.30 or at 1.00pm at Afan Forest visitors' car park.

This is different to the scheduled Brechfa Forest mountain biking excursion as you cannot hire bikes there!

Cheers.

Christian

Message from Sarah - Challenge for Cancer Research UK

On 28th March I fly to Kathmandu, Nepal to start my epic journey, via Gokyo Lakes, Cho La Pass and Kala Pattar to trek to Base Camp Everest at 5554m above sea level.
This is a challenge I have always wanted to pursue, but at the same time will be raising money for Cancer Research UK.
It is something close to my heart and has affected many people I know in recent times, as I am sure many other people have been affected in one way or another. This gives me the opportunity to ask for any donations for the charity, either by the following wegpage: www.justgiving.com/sarahthomson2 or texting me the amount (on 07986 570008) and I will put you on my sponsor form and collect at a later date.

Results of AGM - Election of Officers

We can now confirm what's changed and who's who in the 2009 Committee following the AGM on the 13h March.
Around 15 people turned up to the AGM at the Vivs and we followed the standard system whereby an individual has to be nominated and seconded to be elected. It all went very well and there were no problems arising during this great spectacle of democracy!

Here's a rundown of the results:

Chairperson: Christian Heathcote Elliot steps down, and Doug Morgan is elected

Secretary: Doug Morgan steps down, and Christian Heathcote Elliot is elected

(so basically, Doug has swapped positions with Christian, we thought we'd go for a change after two years of holding the same posts, though in practice we don't see that this will cause any major changes.)

Treasurer: Rob Lewis steps down and Sarah Thomson is elected

Programme Secretary: Trudi Cook is re-elected

Footpath Secretary: Graham Rutt is re-elected

Social Secretary: Tom Jack is re-elected

Publicity Officer: Adele Whittle is re-elected

**New Positions**

In addition to last years posts, two new positions have been filled. This being in order to offer people the opportunity to contribute in their specialist areas, and to lend some deserved recognition for their efforts. The positions are:

Webmaster: Rob Lewis is elected.

Rob created the website around three years ago and ever since it has been the absolute bedrock of the Tawe Trekkers in keeping people fully informed about what's going on in the group. Many of you may not know Rob that well: In recent months other responsibilities have arisen in his life, and he and Marie have not been able to make it on many walks. Despite this, all along he's been working behind the scenes, keeping the website going, fixing technical problems, adding updates and more. Now that Rob has stood down from the role of Treasurer (after two years of excellent service), this new post has been created to give to Rob the recognition he deserves for his vital input with the website.

Joint Programme Secretary: Emyr Morris is elected.

Emyr has definitely been one of the more enthusiastic members of the group over the last year! He's become a self confessed walking addict since joining the TTs and is always out, either on our own walks, or galavanting in some far flung corner of the country on the hardest, longest possible routes he can find! Emyr has put a lot of effort into researching walks routes, leading walks for the TTs and also advising other leaders on routes and technical aspects. It was felt that this position would supplement well Trudi's scheduling of walks (with her brilliant organisational skills). It is anticipated that Emyr will work alongside Trudi to advise on walking routes, and also cover the technical aspects of how we operate our walks (this will include health and safety and navigation). We are going to see how the position develops over the next year and possibly consider renaming it at the next AGM, but for now it's Joint Programme Secretary.

If you have any queries around the AGM or election of officers then please feel free to call Christian or Doug.

Beacons Horseshoe - Sun 15th March

If you're up for a bit of a challenge on Sunday, with stunning scenery, then this walk might tickle your fancy.
There are two walks often referred to as the 'Beacon's Horseshoe.' One goes from the Neaudd Reservoir and approahes Pen y Fan from the south, but this one goes from Cwm Gwdi, north of Pen y Fan, and then traces a shape on the map that looks a bit like a cloven hoof via Bryn Teg, Cribyn, Pen-y-Fan, Corn Du and Cwm Lllwch. My guidebook refers to it as 'arguably the finest mountain walk in South Wales.' Best that you be the judge of that claim!
The walk does have some steep and strenuous climbs, and is graded it as strenuous so please ensure you're feeling upto it and have suitable equipment. Dogs are welcome as long as their owners are well behaved and kept on a lead.

Meeting: County Hall at 0930, or the carpark at Cwm Gwdi at 1030.

Difficulty: Strenuous

Distance: 8.5 Miles

Contact: Doug on 07766652837

Please call me if you plan to meet at the start point in Cwm Gwdi, so I know who/how many to expect and can advise on directions if you're not sure. To get to Cwm Gwdi you'll need to follow the A470 roughly 10km north from the Storey Arms, and then take a right turn just past Libanus, then follow the country lanes west for about 4km to the Cwm Gwdi carpark at the foot of the mountains. Again, an OS map would be invaluable in finding your way.

Caerphilly Mountain - Sat 7th March

This is an 8 mile leisurely walk that takes in forestry, part of the Rumney Valley Ridgeway footpath and Caerphilly Mountain, and includes lunch at the halfway point at a lovely country pub offering real ales and renowned for a warm welcome and good food.

Caerphilly Castle is one of the largest fortresses in Europe - a Norman castle that boasts a tower that out-leans Pisa! It may occasionally be muddy underfoot in one or two places and there are a few stiles so as Graham would say, portable dogs only please!
The pub run a selection of special offers on food, for example - credit cruncher for £2.95, or two meals for £8.95.

Message from Ruth - Charity Walk

Just a brief note to say that I will be doing a sponsored walk on an ancient pilgrim route in North Spain called "The Camino". I will be walking on my own for 7 days until I reach Santiago Di Compostella cathedral. I am raising money for a local charity based in Morriston, Swansea called Peace Mala. The money I raise will give money for a school to enter a project for the Peace Mala Awards for Youth. If you see me on a walk and you would like to sponsor me it would be great!

Around Oxwich Point - Sun 1st March

This Sunday, 1st March, we finish the current Programme with a nice leisurely walk around Oxwich Head. Gary makes his debut as walk leader, but rest assured, he is highly experienced when it comes to navigating his way around areas of natural beauty so we should be in safe hands.
Although an easier walk this route offers plenty of nice Gower scenery, and also the opportunity to have an ice cream at the end (or perhaps even the beginning).

Distance: 4.5 Miles

Difficulty: Easy

Start Points: County Hall at 0930, or Oxwich Bay car park at 1000 (there may be a charge).

Call: Gary on 07545068174. (Note: This is different from the number on the programme. Gary has had to change it as he's been having problems with a few fans/stalkers.)

Uploading Photos - Guidance

A few of you now have the password for the flickr gallery that is linked to the website, and are uploading photos of the walks. This is great, but because there are now several people contributing we agreed at the last committee meeting that we'd issue some simple, common sense guidance on uploading photos. Currently the flickr site is limited to the 200 latest uploads, and the oldest photos are pushed out of view, so bear in mind the principle of 'quality not quantity' throughout!

* Please don't load too many photos of the same walk between you, 5 photos for each walk is reasonable.

* If there are a few people taking photos on a walk intending to upload to the gallery, agree between you on the walk who's going to put what photos on the website.

*Avoid loading multiple photos of a very similar view. Variety is the spice of life!

Saying this, we are very grateful when people do upload images of walks and events, it gives others, including potential new members, an up-to-date view of club activities and it's also a nice way for those who couldn't make it on a walk keep in touch. So keep snapping and uploading!

Footpaths and Way-marking - Message from Graham (Footpath Sec)

As a group affiliated to the Ramblers Association, Tawe Trekkers has a duty to help in the important task of keeping our cherished network of Rights of Way open for this and future genrations to enjoy. There now two ways in which we can all help with this.

1. If you notice a problem with a footpath whilst out walking report it to me and I'll get in touch with the Local Authority to get it sorted. The problems might be broken stiles, collapsed bridges, fallen signs, paths fenced off or obstructive and intimidating landowners! Whatever the problem text or e-mail me brief details including date and an accurate description and Grid Reference. Photos may also help.

2. I have issued most walk leaders with way-markers which can be used to replace broken, faded or lost markers found whilst out on a recce or personal walk. If you haven't got some and would like some, or if you run out please let me know. It's technically the Councils who should be maintaining the way-marking but they are very under-resourced and may take years to get round to it. The main rule for this is only to replace markers that were previously there, however much you might feel that the route would benefit from additional marking! Also remember that some landowners are resentful of footpaths and may get emotional and illogical if you hammer in replacement markers under their noses! It's in everyone's best interests for the paths to be properly marked, especially the landowner's but please be discrete about it and sensitive to their feelings.

Contact Graham on 07770 435341 or e-mail g.rutt1@ntlworld.com.

The Escarpments of Carmarthen Fan - Sat 21st Feb

On Saturday we'll be heading up Carmarthen Fan (don't be fooled by the name, it's nowhere near Carmarthen), from the western side. In my opinion this affords a much better route with easier access to the isolated, dramatic views than the usual route from the eastern approach.
The first half of the walk includes some steep ascents up to the spectacular, elevated viewpoints of Fan Foel summit. The scenery on this walk is amongst the best in the whole of the Brecon Beacons. Let's hope for a nice clear day so that we can appreciate it!

Difficulty: Moderate/Strenuous

Distance: 7.5 Miles

Meeting Points/Times: 0930 at County Hall or 1030 at the start point near Llandeusant.

A note on directions to the start point: If possible follow me up in convoy from County Hall.

Black Mountains Weekend Away - 13/14/15th Feb

There's no day walk next weekend as we have our big weekend away in the Black Mountains! Places are now full so if you're not coming along I'm afraid you'll have to amuse yourselves with your own walks. For those that are coming I've attached the lastest information with the email newsletter. This little guide has changed only very slightly from the last time I issued it back in November, but the new updates are in blue so you can see what's been added. It would help you to print copies of this out and take it along to the weekend with you so you know what's going on.

Programme Meeting - Thursday 19th Feb

The next Programme Meeting will take place on Thursday 19th Feb at the Vivs pub in Sketty from 8pm, and this will replace the regular pub meeting at the Brunswick. If you are able to lead walks or organise social events and want to get involved, please come along or have a chat with Trudi. If you've got any info you can submit before the meeting (to this email address) then that could also help. As always, we'd encourage people to get involved and add their events to the programme if they are able to!

If you want to discuss the programme please call Trudi on 07807726441.

!Bookable Event!

Whisky Galore! - Visit to Penderyn Distillery - Sat 7th Feb

The Tawe Trekkers will be paying an educational visit to a distillery in the Brecon Beacons village of Penderyn on Saturday 7th Feb. As well as being Wales' only distillery, Penderyn is also one of the World's smallest, (they obviously don't know about the one in Rob and Marie's shed). The whisky produced at Penderyn is something quite special. An eminent writer on the subject said:

"Absolutely staggering arrival on the palate of malt, landing with almost snowflake delicateness. Immediately a second movement, this time of bitter-sweet fruit, blood orange included, sweeps down over the startled taste buds. Astonishing stuff."

– Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.

Well I know that not all of you will get quite so passionate about the amber nectar, but even if you're not a big drinker of the stuff, you may still find the production process interesting and learn a few things, and who knows, you may even develop a suprising taste for it?!

You'll need to book as places on the tour are limited, call/text/email/facebook/message or speak to me, Doug on 07766652837 to get your name on the list!

Here's the details:

Meet: County Hall for 13:00 departure or the Penderyn Distillery (in Penderyn, obviously) at 13:45. The tour is booked for 14:00.

Cost: £7.50 each, or less with a discount if we get more than 10 (which we should do). This includes a tasting of Penderyn whisky.

A Note About Rambler's Association Membership

Could I please remind people that if they come on more than a couple of walks with us they need to join the Rambler's Association. You can do this online or get an application form from Dougy. Being an RA member helps to support the organisation's cause of promoting rights of way and walking in the UK, provides funding for the Tawe Trekkers, and you also get freebies and incentives out of it too!

If you are a walk leader you need to have RA membership to protect you against liabilities; if you lead a walk without being an RA member then you as an individual and we as a club are breaking the law!

The RA in London are about to provide me with a full list of who's a member, so I may be chasing some people up, in a nice way, of course.

Difficulty: Moderate

Distance: 7.5 Miles

Swansea Treasure Hunt - Thursday 22nd Jan

This Thursday the regular pub night will be replaced by Rob's Swansea Treasure Hunt. Although the hunt will finish in a pub, I can't say which one as it may give away one of the clues!

To join the treasure hunt, turn up to meet Rob and the other competitors on the steps of Swansea Museum at 1930. Here you will then be divided into teams, issued clues and sent to find the treasure.

Important: you will need to bring torches and compasses.

Call Rob on 07990807510 for details.

If the weather turns out to be unbearably awful, then we'll meet at the Brunswick as usual.

Rhidian and Louise's Birthday - Salt Bar - Sat 24th Jan

Remember that Rhidian and Louise are having their nautical themed birthday party on Saturday night. Meet in Salt bar in Mumbles from 1930.

The theme is nautical fancy dress, so if you're feeling in the mood then please dress up in your themed costumes! Some ideas: Pirates, mermaids, fish, fishermen, captains, sailors. You won't get refused entry for not dressing up(!!), though it would be nice to see some imaginative costumes on the night!!

Hi all,

Next week Christian is putting on a walk near Llantrisant (see info from Chris below). If any Tiger Bay Ramblers are reading this you may be interested in coming along as it's down your neck-of-the-woods?!
____________________________

Llantrisant Forest Walk - 17th January 2009

Start point: Llantrisant Forest car park

Distance: 7 miles (with Tom's extension!)

Difficulty: Easy / moderate (some gradients but only for small sections of the walk)

Description: This walk starts in Llantrisant Forest and extends out onto a ridgeway with fine views before passing through the sleepy village of Llanharan and then heading back into Llantrisant Forest. The walk is slightly longer than advertised due to the addition of Tom's extension which is sure to be the high point of the walk and takes us through a disused mine - ok perhaps high point is stretching it but I think it's worthy excursion - well done Tom!

Dogs: a few stiles so probably best for the smaller breeds.

Meeting point: 9.30 at City and County Hall or 10.15 at Llantrisant Forest car park.

Contact Christian if you require more details: 07791089942

Distance: 5 Miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Meeting: 0930 at County Hall, or the memorial clock in the middle of Talgarth (Emyr says there's also a carpark nearby) at 1045. Grid ref: 155338. Talgarth is on the A479 northwest of Abergavenny.

Happy New Year! Tom is leading the first walk of 2009 up Sugar Loaf Mountain, he's provided thorough details below but if you want to find out more please give him a ring; note the earlier start time.

Later in January we have a newly planned social event, a birthday party in Mumbles with a nautical theme! Read on for more...

_______________________________

Sugar Loaf Mountain - Sun 4th Jan

Length of walk: 7 Miles

Ascent in feet: 1200.

Grade: Moderate (due to height gain)

Location: Black Mountain, Brecon Beacons.

Start time: leave town hall in Swansea gather at 9am for a 9.15 (not 9.30) departure for 10.30am start at pub. Important given long travel time to leave earlier than normal and on time.
Dog Friendly? A few stiles at start but otherwise is open moor and hillside.

Terrain: Fields, well made paths through grassy and braken enclosed slopes, ascend and descend long ridgelines, exposed in high winds. Highest point is a pronouced rocky ridge at 597 Metres, with panoramic views across the Beacons national park, Usk valley and across to Hay Bluff and Offa's Dyke.

Start point: Grid ref: OL13 Explorer, Map: Beacons East OS map. (REF: SO 281152). Name of pub which has a car park which is the starting point is the lamb and flag, can use car park if we drink there afterwards. Plenty of parking. Here is address of the pub: Brecon Road, Llanwenarth, Abergavenny, Wales NP7 7EW (you can multimap this).

It lies about a mile north of the outskirts of Abergavenny, cantref, on the A40. To get to the pub from Swansea the best route is to take the heads of the valleys road up through the vale of Neath, onto the A465m all the way to Llanfoist then turn onto the A4131 OVER USK BRIDGE IN THE TOWN, proceed for a km and then at major junction turn left, west onto the A40 (signposted Talgarth and Crickhowell) and go past Neville hall hospital and contine for one more km till you reach then pub on the A40 on the right, set back from road and with parking to the front.

There will be an opportunity, for those interested, to visit and sample the delights of the Sugar Loaf vineyard at end of walk, time permitting. The red Rondo variety is a bit weak and acid as a cherry flavoured red but the whites are aromatic and decent, if a bit elderflower-heavy and herbaceous on the nose....I should be able to demonstrate what a "Geneva double curtain" is also in trellising terms if we have the chance to look round the vineyard.

We will ascend the Mynedd Lanwenarth rideg and descend Deri, making a full circuit of the mountain to appreciate its fill and diverse character. Many off us who did the three peaks challenge last year will be relishing the chance to reaquaint ourself with this classic route in hopefully better conditions that on that stormy day! This will also be a great introduction to my own favourite area of the national park, personally, for al those going on the black mountains trip in February who are interested in a little "taster" of the area. Abergavenny itself is a delightful, delectable ancient market town in a commanding situation with mountains enclosing it all around, it has a fantastic market, and ruins if a priory and Norman Castle. Happy New year.

Tom Jack.

Joint Birthday Party - Salt Bar, Mumbles - 24th Jan (Nautical Theme Fancy Dress!)

Rhidian and Louise are having a joint birthday party in Salt Bar. Everyone is welcome, but there's a catch (excuse the pun); you'll have to come in fancy dress of a nautical nature (or anything to do with the water/sea).

We'll meet in Salt at 7:30, don't worry there's nothing fishy going on, and there's a plaice for everyone. So if you're feeling a bit rudderless on this weekend, take out a few squid and ship yourselves down to Mumbles on the 24th, don't be crabby; if you're wondering what in cod's name it's all about give Rhidian a call on 07534960567.

Tawe Trekkers Christmas Message

I was both flattered and humbled at the Christmas meal when presented with a lovely bottle of (organic) whisky from the Trekkers. Although this gesture was greatly appreciated, I feel it is all those involved, members and committee, that deserve the thanks for what has been a successful year at the club.

We've had more new people joining compared to previous years, and members old and new have done a great job in making things happen (which go far beyond things like these newsletters). A lot of this activity is 'behind the scenes' so people may not get fully recognised for their efforts. Please spare some thought then for those who enable all the walks, the website, publicity, finances, rights-of-way expertise, social events, I could go on... Those who maintain the social network should also be recognised for the role they play; this may not always be 'official,' but that doesn't matter, and it still greatly benefits the group by acting as the 'glue' that keeps everyone together. There's been more enthusiasm and involvement from more people this year, and also the best fashion sense on record!

It's probably too much to mention every person and what they've contributed, but you know who you are, so thanks. When all's said and done, the group would be nothing without the colourful range of people that go to make it up.

Here's wishing you all a happy Christmas and a prosperous 2009!

Cheers

Craig Cerrig Gleisiad - Brecon Beacons - Sun 23rd Nov

This is a shorter walk than usual, but the scenery is wild and dramatic. We begin from the lay-by for Craig Carreg Gleisiad reserve on the A470, and climb up to the peak of Fan Frynych. The walk continues to the dramatic escarpment of Craig Carreg Gleisiad before a steep descent back to the start point.

Important Note: The walk is showing on the programme as 'Easy.' Following the reccy I have upgraded this to 'Moderate.' Although only 4 miles in length, there is a steepi-ish ascent up to Fan Frynych, and a steep and awkward descent back down from Craig Carreg Gleisiad.
Distance: 4 Miles
Difficulty: Moderate
Meet Points: County Hall car park at 0930h, or the start point (the lay-by at Craig Cerrig Gleisiad picnic area on the A470, approx 2 km north of Storey Arms, GR971222) at 1015h.

Tawe Trekkers’ Black Mountains Weekend - 13/14/15th Feb 2009

Join us for a weekend of walking and high jinks in the beautiful Black Mountains on the Eastern Edge of the Brecon Beacons. We have invited our friends from the Black Country Walking group too, so hopefully we’ll have a good mix of Taffys and Brummies! If the trip appeals to you, please send your money as soon as you can (details below).

Accommodation and Pub

We will be staying in the bunkhouse next door to The Castle Inn near Talgarth in the Black Mountains. The Castle Inn is a traditional pub with a cosy atmosphere (and log fire!), and our bunkhouse, housed in a 200 year old converted barn, is a short stumble away. The sleeping quarters have been newly renovated and include 22 beds, modern showers and toilets, and central heating.
Pillows and fitted sheets are provided, so all you’ll need to bring is a sleeping bag/duvet and towel.
The pub is ideally located for walk routes, and is the starting point for our first day’s walk (this should save us some driving, and time).
There is a car park opposite the pub for our wagons.

The bunkhouse comprises of two rooms, one sleeping 12 and the other 10. If we have a fairly equal split of males/females then we’ll have a boys’ room and a girls’ room. We have visited this bunkhouse and checked it out before booking, so can assure you of the quality!
Please note that the prices on the website: www.thecastleinn.co.uk are out of date for 2009 (unless they’ve updated them since I wrote this!), therefore we will have to pay slightly more than the 2007 prices quoted on the website, with accommodation rising from £12 to £13, and the breakfast rising from £3 to £5.

Transport and Directions

The Castle Inn is situated in the county of Powys, in the Black Mountains, on the Eastern side of the Brecon Beacons National Park. You’ll find it on the A479 between Cwmdu and Talgarth and it will take around 1 ½ hours driving from Swansea, and 2 hours from Birmingham.

Tawe Trekkers: If you need, or are able to provide, a lift, please contact me, Doug, and I will do my best to coordinate transport.

Walks

Saturday – Waun Fach

This walk includes the summit of Waun Fach, views in all directions (from Pen y Fan to Lord Hereford’s Knob), the iron age fort of Castell Dinas, and an exhilarating switchback ridge.

Difficulty: Moderate
Length: 7 miles/4 ½ hours
Leader: Tom (07980477164)
Start time: 0930h from The Castle Inn

(Just imagine getting back on the Saturday evening after a hard day’s walking, with hot showers, pub food, a log fire and real ale* waiting for you!)

*Or substitute your favourite drink.

Sunday – Mynydd Llangorse

This circuit of Mynydd Llangorse provides superb views for remarkably little effort. The path is tree-lined at times and there are spectacular views over Llangorse Lake to the line of the Brecon Beacons.

Difficulty: Easy
Length: 5 ½ miles/3 hours
Leader: Doug (07766652837)
Start time: 1000h from the bottom of Cockitt Hill.

Food (and Drink)

Although there is no kitchen, the pub serves home cooked food at a reasonable price, and the costs quoted include a cooked breakfast. There is also cereal/toast, etc available.

On the assumption that all or most people want the breakfast included, I have included this in the price. If you don’t want breakfast, please let me, Doug, know. Also, please let me know if you’d like a vegetarian cooked breakfast.

When we went to visit the pub, they were doing a range of venison dishes, including a venison burger. They also had a range of ‘hot rock’ dishes, whereby you cook your own food on the table by means of super-heated lumps of rock!

The pub also has real ales on tap. Not sure which they’ll be as they change all the time. However; Rob from the Black Country, if your reading this, you’ll be glad to know it won’t be Banks’.

Quality wines are also available, again at a reasonable price. The landlord follows his taste buds and buys the stuff he likes (claiming his own taste is fairly reliable and that most people agree with him!).

Payment

Now for the maths bit; concentrate...

2 x Board = 2 x £13 = £26
2 x Breakfast = 2 x £5 = £10
Total = £36

If you’re not having breakfast then obviously you’ll pay less.

Please post cheques for £36 made payable to ‘Tawe Trekkers’ to the TT Treasurer:

Rob Lewis
107 Crymlyn Park
Skewen
Neath
SA10 6EF

…as soon as possible please. It helps us to know numbers in planning the trip and we also need to pay a deposit to the bunkhouse. With two groups it’s possible that the trip will fill up pretty soon, so it will be first cheques received, first served.
If you can’t take the hit for the full amount, then a £15 deposit will suffice.

Outline Itinerary

Friday 13th Feb:

Arrive at The Castle Inn in the evening. Dinner in pub at around 2000h. Drink in pub ‘til late.

Saturday 14th Feb:

Have breakfast at 0830h, ready to begin the Waun Fach walk at 0930h. Finish walk at approx. 1600h. Optional trip to Crickhowell or Talgarth for an hour or so before returning for dinner in the Castle Inn at 2000h. Drink in pub ‘til late.

Sunday 15th Feb:

Have breakfast at 0900h, pack up and leave for the short drive to the Start point of the Mynydd Llangorse walk for 1000h. Optional Sunday lunch in Brecon after the walk: I will advise on proposed pub/restaurant closer to the date and take numbers for places; keep an eye on the emails/newsletters.

Further Details

If there’s anything you think I haven’t covered, or anything you’re not sure about please don’t hesitate to give me a call or drop an email to the TT inbox.

Please note these details are subject to change; if this happens I’ll issue updated information closer to the trip.

Doug’s phone number: 07766652837

TT email: info@tawetrekkers.org.uk

…See you there!

Weekend Away - Black Mountains - 13/14/15th Feb

OK folks, we have secured a fabulous bunkhouse in the Black Mountains for our next weekend away. It is next door to, and owned by to a traditional pub called the Castle Inn in the heart of ideal walking territory in the Black Mountains near Crickhowell. Here's the website: www.thecastleinn.co.uk.

There's no kitchen in the bunkhouse as that would obviously detract from people eating in the adjacent pub! However the food is reasonably priced for evening meals and the cost will include (a cooked) breakfast. I need to check what the arrangements are for packed lunches, etc, but I'll get back to you on that.

Cost for the Friday and Saturday night will be £36, and remember, that includes a cooked breakfast.

We are opening this trip up to the Black Country Group as well, and it will be first-come, first-served. So please post your cheques, made payable to 'Tawe Trekkers' off to the Treasurer, Rob, at the following address:

Rob Lewis
107 Crymlyn Park
Skewen
Neath
SA10 6EF

On Tom's last Black Mountains walk we checked out the pub and bunkhouse, and it certainly gets our seal of approval. The bunkhouse has undergone a modern refurbishment, has plenty of space, and the pub is cosy with a log fire, real ales...and a range of venison dishes!

Give me, Doug a call if you want to discuss the details, otherwise, just post your cheques off to Rob to secure your place! If you don't want to send the full amount in one go, then a £15 deposit will be great.

Waun Fach - Brecon Beacons - Sun 26th Oct

Mr. Jack's back with this classic walk in the wilderness of the BB's. It's sure to bring cheer to an Autumn day and it will be well worth travelling a bit further than we usually do for what's in store. After a steep climb to the remains of Castell Dinas, a magnificent viewpoint, we'll continue on a steady climb to the 810 metre summit of Waun Fach - the highest peak in the Black Mountains.
The latter part of the walk includes an exhilirating ramble along a switchback ridge.

Distance: 8.5 - 9 Miles

Difficulty:
Strenuous (due to the degree of ascent and steep climbs)

Start Points:

1. County Hall Carpark at 0930 (Note we will be leaving 0930 on the dot as we need to give ourselves ample time to travel up and do the walk), or...

2. Castell Dinas. Small parking area up unsigned lane 400m north of Castle Inn at Pengenffordd (see map) at about 1040.

Contact: Tom on 07980477164.

Alex and Rebecca are trading the lovely ugly town for the dreaming spires of Oxford and will be moving in the next few days. If you would like to bid Alex, Rebecca and Mark farewell, then they are having a 'house cooling' from 2pm at their soon to be vacated home in Brynmill on Sat 11th Oct (day before Christian's walk). Just drop in during the course of the afternoon.

I'm informed there'll be some nibbles and beverages.

Sunday, September 28, 2008

Hi All,

Just a brief one this week!

There's no regular walk next weekend as we have the Exmoor trip, so those of you who are staying in Swansea will have to make up your own walks! Remember that if you're a member of the Rambler's then you are also entitled to walk with any other Rambler's affiliated club.

For those coming to Exmoor; if you want to know about arrangements for lifts please give me, Doug a call on 07766652837.

If you need info on walks, the bunkhouse, or pubs, then please call Tom on 07834471030.

On Thursday (2nd) it's our regular pub night at the Brunswick from about 8pm onwards. Maybe a useful chance to get together for last minute arrangements for Exmoor?!

Cheers,

Doug

Tuesday 23rd Sept - Pub Quiz with Swansea Outdoor Group

If you get this in time, remember it's the pub quiz at the Westbourne from 8 on Tuesday. Eat plenty of fish throughout the day and bring your thinking caps. We want to give ourselves the best chance possible; there's doctors, academics, and all sorts of brainy characters in the SOGs so they're going to be tough to beat, but we can do it TTs!!

Exmoor - 3/4/5th October

For those that are coming to Exmoor, if you need a lift and haven't got one lined up yet, you can give me, Doug a ring and I'll try to sort you out. Any questions about the walks or accomodation, give Tom a call on 07980477164.

In one last desperate bid to get a few more people for this trip; is anyone else interested in coming?

If we don't get enough people, the club accounts will be short, then the Ramblers' Association will shut us down. The void left by the Tawe Trekkers will cause a power vacuum in Swansea, and shortly this will be occupied by a criminal gang.
The gang will be small at first, but it will grow and grow over the years, diversifying into international trade and politics, spreading it's tentacles into every aspect of life, and then conducting a military conflict on a scale never seen before in history.
This chain of events, which started from something as seemingly minor as a shortage of people on the Exmoor Trip, will ultimately lead to apocalypse and the extinction of humanity (and this puppy).

So if you want to save the World (and Mr. Snugglewumphs here), there might still be time.

Give Doug or Tom a call if your interested, or email us on the address below.
