Sunday 4th April - Fan Fawr and the Ystradfellte Reservoir

On Sunday Doug will lead us on a walk up to the peak of Fan Fawr and then on a full circuit around the Ystradfellte Reservoir. This part of the Brecon Beacons affords us some isolated and grand scenery. It's a lesser-trodden region than the Pen-y-Fan side of the valley on the other side of the A470, but that's a good thing as we will be able to revel in its sense of wilderness! Distance-wise it's longer than our average trek, and there's a couple of steep climbs too, so the walk is rated as 'strenuous'. The rewards, however, will be well worth the exertion!

Meeting: 930 at County Hall or 1030 at the start point opposite Storey Arms (call Doug if you plan to go straight to the start point!)

Distance: 10 miles approx

Difficulty: Strenuous

Thursday 1st April - Regular pub night
Meeting at the Brunswick in Sandfields, after 8pm!!

That's it for this week

Sunday 27th March - South Wales Three Peaks Trial from Abergavenny

The Three Peaks Trial is an organised challenge walk arranged each year in March by the Cardiff Outdoor Group. The Walk was first held in March 1963 and was designed for less experienced walkers who wanted to test their powers of endurance and skill at map reading. It is the third oldest event of its type in the UK. Over the years the event has been modified so in 2010 there is a choice of four routes:

Emyr is planning to lead Team Tawe Trekkers on the 'Gold Route': This is the original challenge, a circular walk of about 20 miles and 5000ft of ascent, which crosses over three prominent peaks around Abergavenny in Monmouthshire: Blorenge, Sugar Loaf and Skirrid. This route is never far from civilisation yet there is no obvious route so that concentration on map reading is essential to keep to the best route (you'll have to concentrate, Emyr!).

You are able to register on the morning of the trial, or you can pre-book online; see www.threepeakstrial.co.uk for details.

Contact Emyr on 07846879210 for details of lifts, walk difficulty, and start times.

Good luck to all TTs who take on the challenge!

Tawe Trekkers Forest of Dean Weekend - 16th to 18th April - Update

The time is fast approaching for our weekend away! The bunkhouse is now full, and walks planned.

Lifts have not been arranged yet, so if you're able to either offer a lift, or need a lift, then please call me, Doug on 07766652837, and I'll do my best to co-ordinate.

People will obviously be leaving and arriving at various times on the Friday, but the plan is to have food at the pub where we're staying at about 7:30 on the Friday night (and Saturday night).

Saturday's Walk

On Saturday I'm planning a walk from Goodrich Castle (3-4 miles from the pub/bunkhouse). We'll walk from Goodrich Castle, and follow a loop along the banks of the River Wye, passing below Coldwell Rocks and the great cliff of Symonds Yat along the way. The walk is 8.5 miles long but is fairly flat so no strenuous climbs!

Sunday's Walk

On the Sunday I've got a walk lined-up which starts at the bunkhouse and follows a route through Astonbridgehill Inclosure (an area of attractive woodland) and Ruardean Hill, where we can get a good view across the Wye Valley to the Malverns and Black Mountains. This walk is 6 miles long.

If there are any issues or questions about the weekend, please call me. Looking forward to seeing a good crowd from the Tawe Trekkers and Black Country there!

That's it for this week, see you soon.

Forest Fawr - Sunday 14th March

Dave leads another dramatic trek in the Beacons which includes the peaks of Fan Gyhirych, Carreg Cadno and Fan Nedd. We'll start the walk from the car park at Craig y Nos Castle. There's a couple of steep climbs on this walk, and it's a bit longer than usual at 10 miles, so it's been graded as 'strenuous'. However, it will be worth the effort as this area does give way to some great views.

Difficulty: Strenuous

Distance: 10 Miles

Meet points: At County Hall at 9:30, or Craig y Nos Castle at 10:45. If you're planning to meet at Craig y Nos please call Dave first.

Contact: For details call Dave on 07828 621311.

That's it for another week, but I'll leave you with the thought that Spring is in the air - which can only be good for us with milder weather and longer days! Let's make the most of it!

Cheers,

Doug
