Hi All,

Just a brief one this week!

There's no regular walk next weekend as we have the Exmoor trip, so those of you who are staying in Swansea will have to make up your own walks! Remember that if you're a member of the Rambler's then you are also entitled to walk with any other Rambler's affiliated club.

For those coming to Exmoor; if you want to know about arrangements for lifts please give me, Doug a call on 07766652837.

If you need info on walks, the bunkhouse, or pubs, then please call Tom on 07834471030.

On Thursday (2nd) it's our regular pub night at the Brunswick from about 8pm onwards. Maybe a useful chance to get together for last minute arrangements for Exmoor?!

Cheers,

Doug

Tuesday 23rd Sept - Pub Quiz with Swansea Outdoor Group

If you get this in time, remember it's the pub quiz at the Westbourne from 8 on Tuesday. Eat plenty of fish throughout the day and bring your thinking caps. We want to give ourselves the best chance possible; there's doctors, academics, and all sorts of brainy characters in the SOGs so they're going to be tough to beat, but we can do it TTs!!

Exmoor - 3/4/5th October

For those that are coming to Exmoor, if you need a lift and haven't got one lined up yet, you can give me, Doug a ring and I'll try to sort you out. Any questions about the walks or accomodation, give Tom a call on 07980477164.

In one last desperate bid to get a few more people for this trip; is anyone else interested in coming?

If we don't get enough people, the club accounts will be short, then the Ramblers' Association will shut us down. The void left by the Tawe Trekkers will cause a power vacuum in Swansea, and shortly this will be occupied by a criminal gang.
The gang will be small at first, but it will grow and grow over the years, diversifying into international trade and politics, spreading it's tentacles into every aspect of life, and then conducting a military conflict on a scale never seen before in history.
This chain of events, which started from something as seemingly minor as a shortage of people on the Exmoor Trip, will ultimately lead to apocalypse and the extinction of humanity (and this puppy).

So if you want to save the World (and Mr. Snugglewumphs here), there might still be time.

Give Doug or Tom a call if your interested, or email us on the address below.

That's it for this week, take care, and stay safe.

Sunday 21st Sept - The Giedd Forest Walk

Now in case you weren't aware, Alex is commonly known as the 'Rain Man' due to his uncanny ability to induce torrential downpours on all of his walks so far;-)! We are all hoping that Alex will be able to buck the trend this weekend on his latest attempt at the wonderful Giedd Forest walk.

This is a walk around the upper Swansea valley which includes the Giedd forest along with some open stretches of hills and moors. There will be some sections of broken ground and potential bogginess so come prepared! Don't let that put you off though as this walk is a winner; bleak, peaceful and atmospheric (in the right conditions!!), with a good variety of landscapes.

Meeting Times: 0930 at County Hall Carpark or about 1015 at the walk start point; Cwmgiedd Picnic Site at GR792128.

Difficulty: Moderate with some rough terrain in patches

Distance: 10 Miles

Contact: Alex N on 01792296685

The Gower MacMarathon - Sat 13th Sep

A few of the Trekkers have signed up to this major event in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, but if you are still interested then please call Emyr as soon as possible on 07846879210, or contact Macmillan directly on 01792 540079.

This is a looooooong walk at about 20 miles but there's a great atmosphere to enjoy with hundreds of fellow participants doing the same route!

This walk goes 22 miles along the cliff path from Rhossili to Mumbles, and you will need a rest and a drink at the end of it!

It's not for the faint hearted but you’ll be rewarded with great coastal views and the satisfaction of supporting a worthy charity.

You will need to register to take part on this walk. I can't guarantee it's not too late already, but for details of how to join 'Team Tawe Trekkers' call Emyr as soon as possible.

The Lighter Alternative - Rhidian's Rhossili Ramble

Although this walk is not on the programme, it is likely that Rhidmeister will be doing a walk around Rhossili on the Sunday of approx. 7 miles. Give him a ring for details on 07534960567.

TT Christmas Meal - December 19th!

Is it me or are preparations for Christmas starting earlier and earlier every year? I even saw some Christmas-themed chocolates in the shop today!

Anyway, when it comes to booking Christmas meals then we have to be early as restaurants are like gold dust around Christmas. Caroline has seized the opportunity to book the wonderful Vincents in Sketty on December 19th. Call her on 07971018664 for details and to book your place. More details on this to follow!

Rambler's Membership - Sign up now as rates may change!

(By sheer coincidence the theme of urgency is a recurring one in recent newsletters.)

If you aren't already a member of the Ramblers Association and come walking regularly with us then you need to join up. This makes you a member of the Tawe Trekkers (as long as you state your club a 'Tawe Trekkers' in the application), and the number of members we have as a club is proportional to the size of grant that we receive from central RA.

If you are leading a walk then it is essential that you are a member of the RA as this provides you with liability insurance in the event of an accident.

The rates for this year are only valid upto the end of this month, so you might be saving a few quid if you join now. Current annual rates are £27 for individual, £36 for joint, £15 for reduced (jobseeker, student, low-income), and £20 for reduced joint.
So membership works out at about 50p a week; the only kind of pint you could buy with that much is a pint of Doug's homebrew, and believe me, that is not pleasant.

Being a member of the Tawe Trekkers (through the RA) entitles you to benefits such as regular publications with walking routes and advice, and 10% off all equipment at outdoor shops! (Surely the best benefit of being a member).

You can join online at www.ramblers.org.uk, or get an application form from Doug, but remember, you might save a bit of money if you do it before the end of the month.

For info on how membership funds are utilised by the RA, and more details on what you're getting for your money then you can call our Treasurer, Rob L on 07990807510, or me on the usual number.
