Sunday 5th February – Pontneddfechan Waterfall Walk

In a change to the advertised walk, Lesley and Paul lead us on a Tawe Trekkers favourite, taking us up the River Nedd and down the River Mellte, exploring some of the most beautiful waterfalls and gorges in the country. This will include one moderately steep climb. Please bring waterproofs as we will be walking behind one of the waterfalls. There will also be an option to view a spectacular cave so bring torches if you'd like to have a look at this!

IMPORTANT - Note that due to daylight, we will be meeting earlier than usual at 9.00am at County Hall and 9.30am at the start point (The Angel pub in Pontneddfechan).

Distance: 9.5 miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Emyr returns with a walk around Castell Coch near Cardiff. The castle was built as a folly for the Earl of Bute in the Boheimian style and is surrounded by pleasant woodland and hills. There's a lovely pub stop en route too!

This Sunday Paul and Lesley will lead a walk in the Rhondda Valley. It's a bit of a steep start to begin with, but once you're up you're on a lovely horseshoe around Ton Pentre.

Pantomime (Beauty and the Beast) at the Ostreme Centre - 15th to 18th Feb

Our very own thespian, Christian, will play a leading role as a camp hairdresser; Trudi will be singing in the choir; and I'm even helping this year with a bit of scenery painting and prop making. To Bethlehem and back - Sunday 18th December

The last walk before Xmas takes us into rural Carmarthenshire with our friends from the Swansea Outdoor Group. Includes visiting the heights of the iron age fort at Carngoch, views over the Towy valley and the village of Bethlehem. Seasonal hats and carol singing are mandatory! Lol!

Swansea Outdoor Group will kindly supply the mince pies, choc fudge cake & hot mulled wine to keep us going! Finishing off in the pub in Llangadog.

Dave's Gluhwein Walk at Margam Park - Sunday 11th Dec

As it '''tis the season to be jolly', Dave will be leading a themed walk this Sunday around the magical Margam Park near Port Talbot. It will be a leisurely walk of only around 4-5 miles (not the original 10 miles on the Programme), and we will be taking a long lunch where we will have chance to show off our wine-making and baking skills - please feel free to bring along gluhwein (hot mulled wine), mince pies, Christmas cake, pudding, or any other of your seasonal confections!!

Pub Nights at the Brunswick

We've had a bit of a lull in terms of the number of people turning up to the Brunnie lately. We don't think there's anything sinister going on(!) and put it down mainly to the mere fact that a few people happen to be busy with other activities and life events at the moment. What we can do (communication-wise) though is remind people that the regular pub evenings are every fortnight at the Brunswick in Sandfields (the residential area just west of Swansea City Centre). The next pub night at the Brunswick is on the 15th Dec. As always, old and new members alike welcome. Hope to see a few people there for a festive pint.

Sunday 4th - Ynysmeudwy

This is not an easy walk – it’s a very easy walk! The walk is mostly on tarmacadam paths (but not on roads) alongside the Tawe and Swansea Canal. It takes in part of the St. Illtyd’s Way. Even though the walk is flat there’s an opportunity to see waterfalls and weirs.

Distance: 8 miles

Difficulty: Easy

W&P Walk 1: Cardiff - Sunday 27th November

Martin leads us on the first walk of his series of Waterside & Parkland walks. These are intended to be walks based in and around urban areas where, apart from views over the town or city, the intention is to spend much of the walk in green spaces, or the more pleasant urban settings often found beside water. This walk starts in the centre of Penarth, near to the railway station.

This is a linear walk, returning back along the same route where we will be aiming to finish around 4:30pm. Walking at a reasonable, relaxed pace for about 2.5 hours in each direction, we could walk over 8 miles. But for those who aren't so keen on walking that far, there are cafes on the route where you can stop, rest and relax and wait for the rest of the group on their return.

Apart from one hill, the route is mostly flat and to avoid climbing over the hill twice, a shorter return route (if light permits) takes us back over some rocky ground. Bring a torch, if you have one - so we have a few between the us, in case it's cloudy (and gets dark early) or our return is delayed as sunset will be at about 4.10pm.

These arrangements are flexible so will depend on the group's preferences and the weather on the day!

Start: 11.00am in Penarth.
Finish Time: 4.30pm (approx.)
Distance: 6 to 9+ miles.
Difficulty: Moderate.

Although there's no walk showing on the Programme for this weekend - Emyr has offered to lead one for us from Pontneddfechan in the Neath Valley. The walk includes an exhilarating stretch along the edge of Fforest Fach, and a series of waterfalls including the spectacular Sgwd yr Eira which we will walk under! (Waterproofs are essential).

Saturday 5th November - BONFIRE NIGHT

For the TTs Bonfire Night activity this year we're invited to the Pier Cafe in Mumbles where OnePeople Productions are offering 'Panoramic Swansea Fireworks'. Instead of standing around in the cold to view the pyrotechnics why not join us in the warmth of the cafe which has commanding views of the Bay and has been exclusively booked for this event.

A basket meal is included in the price together with live music, short films and children's entertaintment.

Tickets in advance are £8.50 waged, £7.50 concession and £3.50 for children. They can be obtained from the Red Cafe in Mumbles, the Environment Centre in Pier Street or by calling/texting Graham on 07770 435341.

If there is still space, they will also be available on the door for £10 waged, £8.50 concession or £4 for children.

This weekend's walk offers great views overlooking Rhossili and Worms Head (weather permitting!!). From Rhossili we follow the coast past Mewslade and Falls bay. We then heaad inland and walk behind Rhossili Down to Hillend and finally return along Rhossili beach.

A few of us are attending a barn dance in the Ostreme Hall in the Mumbles this Saturday at 8pm. There is a live band "Whisky in a Jar" and should be fun. 30th December - 1st January - Tawe Trekkers New Year Llyn Peninsula Beano

This year the Tawe Trekkers are joining forces with our fellow walkers from the midlands, the Black Country Group, and walking in the Llyn Peninsula area over the New Year period. We will be staying at Totters Hostel in Caernarfon (http://www.totters.co.uk/default.asp). This is a good quality hostel. Accommodation is £16 per night and is centrally located so entertainment will be readily available to see in the New Year. Three walks are being planned: a coastal walk to Aberdaron; a walk along the Anglesey coast path and a walk up on one of the smaller moutains in the Snowdonia range.

On Sunday Andy M will be leading another linear walk in his native Vale of Glamorgan. He has a picturesque route lined up for us that will join these two lovely villages via some pub stops on the way. We will either shuttle in cars or get the bus back to the start point.

A short one this week....

Sunday 2nd October - Neuadd reservoir and three peaks walk

This week Emyr takes us back into the Brecons. This walk includes the three main peaks of the Brecon Beacons and is one of the finest mountain walks in the area. The walk begins with a lengthy gradual climb from Neuadd reservoir taking in Corn Du, Pen y Fan and Cribyn. The walk then returns towards an old Roman road before returning to Neuadd reservoir.

This is a walk really worth doing with great views of the Brecon Beacons and further afield.

Length: 8.5 miles

Difficulty: strenuous

Saturday 24th September - Mynydd Margam

Please note that this is a change to the walk advertised in the programme. We will first head North through Margam Park before venturing into heavily forested areas beyond. The route then circles back along quiet tracks and paths towards Goytre and Brombil. The grand finale is spectacular views over the coastal plain and Severn Estuary from the hills overlooking Margam Steel Works. You'll also see Brombil reservoir which is an extremely peculiar shade of turquoise and a WW2 Radar station. Deer are a distinct possibility.

Distance: 12 miles

Difficulty: Moderate/Strenuous. This is quite a long walk but the climbs and descents are generally quite gentle and the surfaces are reasonably even. Maximum altitude only about 340 m.

Another walk that represents the best of the Brecon Beacons. We follow the line of the spectacular Caerfannell ridge with views across the full range of the Beacons. This walk also features the wreckage of a Canadian warplane. Dave kindly steps in for Emyr to lead this excellent walk!

South Gower - Bishopston Valley - Sunday 11th

Starting at Caswell Bay and taking in much of the variation in landscape of the surrounding area of south-east Gower, Martin leads us on a re-run of a local walk that winds it way through through Bishopston Valley and later passes Pwlldu Bay. This walk is both for those who were unable to make it last time and for those who have done it before where the later season makes some the environments we pass through completely different to before. The walk can be expected to be quite muddy in places, even if it is dry on the coast or has not being raining for sometime.

Difficulty: Moderate (with some short steep climbs / descents)

Distance: 7.75 miles

Meeting point: Meet at County Hall at 9:30 or 10:15 at Caswell Bay car park (Grid Ref: SS 5935 8765 - on the opposite side of the road to the car park). For more details please contact Martin S (07743593068).

Last week once again the Tawe Trekkers pub quiz team were one question away from winning first prize and ended up with third place instead. And embarrassingly one of the questions we got wrong was the colour of secondary roads on Ordnance Survey maps. But if I had a map with me at the time I would have argued that the colour can be interpreted as orange or brown! Anyway, we need your help to answer just one more question correctly. Saturday 27th - Devon boat ride and a walk from Ilfracombe

Why not find your sea legs and join Doug on the Balmoral which is sailing to Ilfracombe this Saturday. Once alighted Doug will take you on a lovely walk along the North Devon Coast.

Dartmoor

This weekend (19th Aug) we have the Dartmoor Trip!

Apologies if this is a bit high-level, but a lot’s been going on lately so I haven’t been able to do an awful lot of planning for this trip. I have hopefully done enough though to make it just about work(!)

There is no day walk around Swansea I’m afraid, but if you’re coming along to Dartmoor then here are some details (high level but should be enough to get by with, I’ll give you fuller information on the trip itself). There are ten of us going – which is a good manageable number!

We are staying at the Harford Bunkhouse in Harford on the southern edge of Dartmoor National Park. Follow the road to Harford moorgate. After Lukes Land turn right and follow the signs... MAP REF. SX641584. Entering Harford into your satnavs should be helpful, but if you need more information on directions then please give me a call. Whatever time you turn up at the bunkhouse, just mention you’re with Doug/Tawe Trekkers and you should be directed to your accommodation.

On the Friday night people will need to accommodate for themselves in terms of food (probably best as we’ll be turning up at different times but we might manage to get us all together for a pub meal etc at the last minute), and on the Saturday night I’ll cook something for us in the kitchen. I’m proposing one of my chocolate chilli con carnes. I’m hoping to do a simple dessert as well. Should only be a few quid each, I’ll let you know how much it comes to.

On the Saturday we’ll have an 8 mile walk and on Sunday we’ll do a 7 miler on the way back. Will give more details on the trip but if you want info beforehand then give me a call.

Robert leads a very easy walk starting from Swiss Valley in Llanelli. There are only a couple of short hills and much of the walking is on cycle-way or good paths. (However there is about half a mile where the path is less clear and those wearing shorts had better beware – it’s also where your leader is likely to get a little lost!)

Difficulty: Easy

Clyne Common, some surprisingly green areas of West Cross and then back along Swansea Bay. Clyne Gardens is “internationally famous for its superb collections of Rhododendrons, Pieris and Enkianthus; the gardens offer a haven of tranquillity, lush planting and interesting features” according to the Council sales pitch. This really is one of the best walks in the Brecon Beacons. Dave leads us around the spectacular elevated ridges of the Carmarthen Fans, passing the mountainside lakes of Llyn y Fan Fawr and Llyn y Fan Fach en route. The literal high point of the walk is Fan Hir.
Distance: 12 miles

Thursday 7th July 2011 - Evening Walk - **Change to programme**
Since we have recently visited Mumbles we won’t go there again so soon - instead something completely different. A premier league walk visiting our chair’s ancestral home – Morris Castle – with fine views over Swansea and the bay; the walk also takes in Llewellyn Park and we return via the banks of the Tawe. Whilst there is a bit of urban walking it is more than made up for by exploring green parts of Swansea that you never knew existed. If you have ever wondered what the ruins on the hill near Plasmarl are - you see them from the train as you travel east - then you will find out on Thursday.

Meet 7.30 at Harvester pub by Liberty Stadium (number 4 bus, amongst others, runs very close to start point)

Sunday 10th July 2011 - South Gower Circular

Starting at Penmaen we head over Cefy Bryn hill and through Penrice woods before heading over fields until we reach Slade bay. We then enjoy a coastal walk around Oxwich point and along Oxwich bay to Three Cliffs Bay. The terrain is generally good but there is a section that is a little overgrown and muddy parts are likely if weather turns! This is a longer walk for the Gower, but well worth the extra effort!

Distance: Approx 12 miles

Difficulty: Strenuous (due to length)

You probably know by now but I am about to start a new job down Newport way. Before I go I'd like to just say that I will very much miss Swansea and my friends here - and particularly those in the Tawe Trekkers. I couldn't've wished to meet a nicer bunch of people during my 8 years here. I will definitely be back regularly for the walks and events, (plus I haven't found a house in Cardiff/Newport yet anyway so still have my Swansea flat to come back to on weekends for the time being). When I do move though, any offers of a place to stay around Swansea on the odd weekend will be greatly appreciated, ha ha! I won't be leaving in a literal sense as I will still be involved with the club and the walks, and hope to catch up with as many of you as I can on a regular basis. All things considered, I won't be able to have the same level of involvement in the running of the TTs anymore (which is just as well because I've probably hogged the limelight for long enough now, ha ha!). From now on I would encourage people to contact Emyr or Christian for general Club matters in the first instance, and I'm sure they'll be happy to help you.

Committee-wise, I will remain as Programme Coordinator until the next AGM. Emyr as Chair will carry the Club forward through 2011. I wholeheartedly wish him and the rest of the committee the very best of luck, I'm sure the TTs will do very well with them as they are a great bunch of people with the best interests of the Club at heart.

Sunday 22nd May - Preselli Mountains

Our intrepid walker Emyr takes us out west to Pembrokeshire, where the splendour of the Preselli mountains await. The mountains give way to expansive views across the land and seas of West Wales. This walk should definitely blow the cobwebs out.

Waterfalls Walk from Ystradfellte - Sun 15th May

Starting from Ystradfellte we will follow the Mellte river south before we head west to return via the Nedd Fechan river. Scenery is picturesque limestone country and we will see the Clun Gwyn waterfalls and plenty of lambs! (There is a slight change as we won't be going under Sgwd yr Eira as mentioned in the programme and the walk is slightly shorter than advertised).

Distance: 6 Miles

Difficulty: Mostly easy but one part moderate needing sturdy footwear as it is bit of a scramble.

A stunning circular walk starting at Pitton, heading inland behind Rhossili Down to Hillend, before heading back along Rhossili beach and the coastal path enjoying views of Fall and Mewslade bay.

Please note this is a change to the scheduled walk to Worms Head due birds nesting and preventing the final ascent to Worms Head itself. We plan to include this on the next programme when the birds have left!!!

Provisional Dates in June - Training Rides for the South Gower Bike Ride

At the programme meeting on Thursday a schedule for four training rides specifically for those intending to take part on the 50-mile South Wales Bike Ride (formerly Gower Bike Ride) on Sunday 3rd July will be arranged around the main programme of walks. (It will also be suitable for anyone doing the 29-mile route.)

The proposed training programme involves attempting a 40-mile ride two weeks before the event with an easier 25 mile ride in between to maintain fitness. These initial proposed dates start the training after the Snowdon weekend away at the end of May:

Friday 3rd June: 15 mile evening ride on the Gower
Weekend of 11th/12th June: 25 mile daytime ride on the Gower
(on the other day to the walk that weekend)
Saturday 18th June: 40 mile daytime ride. Either:

Along the Millennium Coastal Path to Pembrey Forest and back, or
Taking the train further west than Pembrey and cycling back along the coast

Friday 24th June: 25 mile evening ride along Swansea river valley
(A week's rest!)
Sunday 3rd July: 50-mile South Wales Bike Ride

Nick Revell was the resident compère at The Comedy Store for 10 years and in 1989 he had a BBC Radio 4 show and BBC1 TV show. He put in a very entertaining and memorable performance at a gig in Cheltenham in 2004 and hopefully he'll be up to the same standard at this event.

Pembrey Country Park - Sun 24th April

This Easter Weekend we will be exploring the forests and sands of Pembrey Country Park. The area boasts expansive swathes of lush woodlands and miles of sandy beaches - you may even want to bring a frisbee along! There are numerous opportunities for ice cream stops along the way. Walking is fairly easy and flat, and (due to popular demand) we will be meeting LATER than usual for this walk. 1030 at County Hall and 1130 at Pembrey. The picture shows a view of Gower as seen from Pembrey Sands.

Distance: 6 Miles Approx

Difficulty: Easy

Meeting: 1030 at County Hall, or 1130 at Pembrey. I am planning to park in the carpark about 100 yds before the main entrance to the Park in order to avoid the £5 per car parking fee. Please keep in touch with me via mobile if you are planning to go straight there so we can coordinate the meet up.

Fuel Costs - New Guidelines

With the ever-increasing price of fuel, driving to walk locations is becoming an expensive pastime! Until now we have not had any documented guidelines to ensure that drivers are fairly reimbursed, but pressure is rightly mounting to address the situation. I have listened to members' views including those of drivers and passengers alike, spoken to Emyr, and we have agreed that the club should endorse guidance which enables drivers to be fairly reimbursed.

The Ramblers Association recommends that drivers are entitled to ask for 28p per mile and from now on we will be backing this recommendation as a club.

If it helps a quick example; if you clock up 40 miles and there are 4 people in the car (including the driver), then the total cost would be calculated as 40 x 28p = £11.20 = £2.80 per person. Obviously the more people in a car the cheaper it'll be for each person over a given journey, so we would also recommend that passengers are evenly distributed, where possible!

I'm sure that there'll be a few questions and we'll refine these guidelines if needs be - once people have had their say and added any other ideas. In the meantime though we'd ask that people just apply common sense and bear the principle of fairness in mind, and we shouldn't go far wrong from there!

North East Gower - Sunday 27th February 2011
Next Sunday Robert leads us on a really easy walk in north east Gower – an often ignored area that nevertheless has much of interest. For example we cross Welsh Moor, a mosaic of damp acid grassland and drier heath, which is owned and managed by the National Trust. Work has recently taken place on the site to encourage a greater diversity of heathland plants. We return along the coastline with views across the salt marsh and estuary.
Difficulty/distance:About 6.5 miles mostly on good roads / tracks but boots still needed for occasional muddy bits.
Meeting point: 09:30 at Civic Centre, as usual; or at the Welcome to Town in Mill Lane, Llanrhidian (SS 497 922) before 10:15 – but please let Robert know on 07981 963 681 if you are going directly to the meeting point.

Saturday 19th February - Margam (by Graham)

This walk on lesser used trails takes us through a wide variety of scenary - a dramatic industrial landscape at the start followed by the desolate flatness of Margam Moors, sand dunes, pastureland, woodland and the sweeping vistas of Margam Park. The river Kenfig is a frequent companion. Sites of interest include Kenfig Castle and an iron age hill fort. On the recce I saw a large herd of deer in Margam Park and some highland cattle grazing in the Kenfig National Nature Reserve.

Distance: 10 miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Sunday 13th - Fan Hir and Carreg Gleisiad

From the historic Craig-y-Nos Castle, Dave takes us up into the hills along the Drovers' Trail and along Fan Hir for some desolate and beautiful scenery in the Western Beacons.

Thursday 10th - Regular pub night

As newly appointed social secretary Martin has been conjuring his magic to devise a cunning plan to get us to well...er socialise. Tuesday 15th February (next week) brings us the first of Martin's cinema nights, planned to be a regular event every other Tuesday (so if all goes to plan, next one will be 1st Mar). Brecon Beacons: The Neuadd Reservoir Walk - Sat 5th Feb

On Saturday (a change from the usual Sunday!) we'll follow a route around the Neuadd valley and reservoir. This walk will include high ridges, the highest mountain in southern Britain (Pen y Fan) and other peaks - Corn du and Cribyn.

The walk is rated at moderate-to-strenuous as there are a couple of steep climbs and some difficult-ish terrain. The elevated and exposed positions on this route mean that people should come prepared with plenty of layers, hat/gloves, good boots, and decent waterproofs. It's worth a bit of a slog though for the dramatic views and atmosphere!

Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous

Distance: 7.5 Miles

Ascent: 850 Metres

Meeting Points: County Hall at 0930, or the start point at the pumphouse near Neuadd reservoir at 1030.

Emyr takes us further afield to the Black Mountains this week. This circular walk takes us from Crickhowell to Table Mountain, eventually reaching Pen y Gadair summit. Well worth the extra journey, I'm sure you'll agree!

Difficulty: Strenuous

Weekend away - Betws-y-Coed - Friday 27th- Monday 30th May
Sarah is kindly organising a joint weekend away with the Lancashire Young Persons Walking Group (LYPWG) who she got to know when she deserted us for a year! We hope to fill the entire Vagabond hostel and plan walks for the Saturday, Sunday (and those who can manage it - the Monday), as well as the usual socialising on such occasions!

Facilities are as above link, (drying room, bar, common room, large garden terrace etc) and the bunkhouse is located right in the centre of Betws-y-coed. Apparently there are also 2 x heated dog kennels and dogs allowed in hostel (exc. kitchen)!

£21 per person each night - Fri 27th & Sat 28th (Breakfasts are obligatory on weekends and include cooked breakfast, cereal, toast and unlimited tea/coffee throughout the day)

£16 for Sun 29th (not including breakfast, or extra £5 for breakfast)

The Vagabond also do an evening meal, which would be in the form of a big pot of curry, chilli......approx £7. But we could also book restaurants outside if needed. There are self-catering facilities for those who wish to cook their own evening meals.

Ferryside Walk - Sun 23rd Jan

On Sunday, Robert (Bob) will be leading a walk on the Tywi estuary in Carmarthenshire. Much of the route is on quiet roads and farm tracks; however there are a few places that are very boggy so waterproof boots are essential if you don’t want wet feet. The route encompasses about 7.5 miles of pleasant countryside and views over Afon Tywi. (The photo shows a picture taken from a similar walk that we did in 2008).

Meet at County Hall at 9.30 am as usual. Alternatively meet at the start point, Ferryside car park, which is alongside the railway station (SN 366 104) at about 10:15. Note; if you are meeting directly at the start point please text Bob to let him know on 07981 963 681.

This is a change to the advertised walk which was going to be in Glyncorrwg (sorry folks I need to be back early!). We will be doing a classic Gower walk starting in Oxwich and weaving our way through the woods and coastline to Port-Eynon and then heading back inland via Horton back to Oxwich.

We've been having some pretty bad weather lately (as if that needs saying!). Last night the snow stopped some people from getting to the Christmas Meal at Truffle :-( but those who did make it had a very enjoyable time. Thank you, Tyra, for organising a wonderful evening for us, even though you were not able to make it yourself!

I'd like to propose another meal in the New Year to (at least partially) make up for the problems caused this time around. I'm thinking of a date of Sat 22nd Jan, an

Programme Meeting and AGM - Thursday 13th Jan, 7.30 @ The Vivs in Sketty

There's no pub night planned this week, b

ut it's worth mentioning that on the Thursday 13th Jan we will have our Programme Planning Meeting and AGM, where we will be putting together the next programme of walks and electing the new committee. New year, new start!

Most people will probably know already, but I, for one, wish to step down from my committee post of Chair this year, and give someone else a chance. Someone, hopefully, with fresh ideas and renewed energy! I'm more than happy to talk about the role of to anyone who might be interested in taking it over, to help as much as I can in handing it over to a new person, and would encourage people to stand for this, and all other available positions.

That said, I still wish to be involved on the TT committee - but in more of a supporting capacity. It's about time someone else had a go at Chair though! :-)

More details on this to follow so watch this space - in the meantime have a think about if you'd like to get involved in the New Year.

Martin gallantly leads a walk to blow the cobwebs away after the Tawe Trekker Christmas meal on Saturday night. Conseqeuntly please note below that the walk starts later than usual!!
Starting near Penmaen this walk takes in the breathtaking scenery that is the South Gower - including Three Cliffs Bay, Pobbles Beach, Bishopston Valley and Pwlldu!

Sunday 21st November 2010 - Mynydd Drum and Seven Sisters

Seven Sisters is an archetypal coal town which came into being to serve the needs of those who laboured for the 'Black Gold'. The surrounding landscape speaks of 150 years of exploitation. This walk starts in this historic town and takes us via pleasant woodlands to the open hillside of Mynydd Drum. We then circle clockwise round the outside of the Nant Helen Opencast site taking in forested areas and pleasant farmland before returning to Seven Sisters. There are some interesting views on the circuit, but it's the insight into coal mining which is perhaps the biggest draw. You'll see an active opencast site, a man-made hillside, a working coal washery, the remains of the famous Neath and Brecon Tramway and reclaimed land. You'lll also seee some pleasant countryside which is about yo be gobbled away by opencast production. Come see it now before it literally disappears!

Distance: 8 miles

Difficulty: Moderate. There is one steepish climb at the beginning, but otherwise we don't lose or gain much height for the rest of the walk. We need to cross a stream near the start so make sure that you have walking boots with a good grip. If it's been dry it should be easy, othersie we'll need to construct some stepping stones!

Back to normal now after our (successful) hosting of the Glamorgan Area AGM. I know I've said it before but many thanks to those who helped out on the day with arranging the hall, serving refreshments...and of course making all those lovely cakes and biscuits! It was a very successful day, thanks not least to to the help of the volunteers from TT.

Remembrance Day Walk @ Craig-y-Nos - Sun 14th Nov

For Remembrance Day Dave leads a walk from Craig-y-Nos to the crash site of a Wellington Bomber. Dave is planning to lay a wreath at the crash site so if anyone would like to contribute a small amount towards the wreath, please give to Dave on the day and it will be gratefully received.

The walk itself includes a path along the Drovers Trail and through the atmospheric disused quarries at Craig-y-Nos. This route gives way to some of the most eerily desolate views in the Brecon Beacons.

To get to the crash site for 11am, we will need to leave County Hall earlier than usual - at 0815, ready for meeting up at the start point at Craig-y-Nos at 0900. Note this is earlier than the time advertised on the website's programme!

Distance - 10 Miles

Difficulty - Moderate

Meeting - County Hall at 0815, or the lay-by near Craig-y-Nos Castle at 0900.

Moonlight Walk - Sat 13th Nov

Ruth's moonlight walk was originally scheduled for last week, but I'm told that this will now take place this Saturday night - 13th Nov. The route comprises a short moonlit walk around the Lliw Reservoir before heading to the pub - please remember to bring a torch! :-)

...and so the season changes and darkness descends, but do not fear the Trekkers will continue to stride their stuff through the winter months. This week brings us two short walks, an AGM and our regular pub night.

Glamorgan Area Ramblers AGM - Saturday 6th November

This year we are hosting the Glamorgan Area Ramblers AGM in the Mumbles so it would be great if we could have a good turn out from the Trekkers contingent. We'll be extending a warm welcome to all clubs from the Glamorgan Area!

Where and when?

We will meet at Oystermouth Square carpark (adjacent to Boots in the Mumbles) at 10.30am for a leisurely 4 mile stroll around Mumbles Head before returning for the start of the AGM at 2pm .

The AGM will be held in Victoria Hall, 6 Dunns Lane (just off Mumbles Road). Graham has very kindly arranged for a guest speaker to do a talk for us at the meeting. Dr Roger Wade should be making an appearance at around 2 to speak about energy options and climate change, a subject that I'm sure most people would agree is interesting and relevant. It would be great to get as many Trekkers as possible to lend support to the event, and any volunteers for tea/coffee making, or even a bit of cake/biscuit baking will be much appreciated!!!

Lliw Reservoir moonlight walk - Saturday 6th November

Ruth will venturing around the Lower Lliw Reservoir in Felindre to take full advantage of the full moon. No doubt there will be a stop off at a pub afterwards. Please bring torches or other suitable lanterns!

Meeting point: 7.30 pm at Lower Lliw Reservoir car park which is accessed from the road between Felindre and Rhyd-y-Pandy, three miles north from M4 Junction 46 (please contact Ruth if you need more specific details).

Distance: 1-2 miles

Grade: Easy

Friday 19th - Sunday 21st November 2010 - Real Ale Ramble weekend away

On saturday there will be an organised walk of 10, 15 or 25 miles with real ale checkpoints on the way! On sunday we'll organise a short walk before heading back to Swansea. Accomodation is £42 for 2 nights (room only), kitchen facilities available but pub next door provides breakfast for £5.50. This should be a great weekend away, if you want to join those of us already booked, there's limited places available. Beacons Horseshoe - Sun 24th Oct

Hi everyone. If you're up for a bit of a challenge on Sunday, with stunning scenery, then this walk might tickle your fancy.

There are two walks often referred to as the 'Beacon's Horseshoe.' One goes from the Neaudd Reservoir and approaches Pen y Fan from the south, but this one goes from Cwm Gwdi, north of Pen y Fan, and then traces a shape on the map that looks a bit like a cloven hoof via Bryn Teg, Cribyn, Pen-y-Fan, Corn Du and Cwm Lllwch. My guidebook refers to it as 'arguably the finest mountain walk in South Wales.' Best that you be the judge of that claim!

The walk does have some steep climbs, and is graded as strenuous. If we are blighted by treacherous weather and poor visibility then I'm going to do an alternative walk (if there is the demand for it). However, I'm hoping that the sun shines down on us so that we can take advantage of this stunning route.

Meeting: County Hall at 0900, or the carpark at Cwm Gwdi at approx 1000. NOTE THE EARLIER THAT USUAL START TIME. Please do try to be on time at County Hall (or the start point if you're going straight). I only say this because it's a longer walk than usual with a bit of a drive up and we want to make sure we make good time and don't run out of daylight.

Difficulty: Strenuous.

Distance: 10 Miles

Back from the Bavarian Alps, Dave leads a walk in the slightly more tame environment of the Garw Valley (near Maesteg). There's one steep climb but it's worth it for the spectacular views which extend to Cwm Ogmore, Cwm Llynfi, Swansea Bay and Pen-y-Fan.

Distance: 8 Miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Germany Pics

Dave organised an amazing trip to the Bavarian Alps which a few lucky Trekkers and Black Country walkers returned from yesterday - tired, but it's fair to say, exhilarated. The literal highpoint of the trip was the Zugspitze; the highest point in Germany with a peak of almost 3000m (10,000ft) in altitude - nearly 3 Snowdons!

According to the pathfinder guide 'there's a genuinely remote feel to this walk through the open and largely empty terrain of the Gronw Valley'. This was certainly the case when I did this walk in January! The positive is that it's new territory for the Tawe Trekkers (I think!!). Unfortunately, it does involve a chunk of road walking in the middle of the walk!

Distance: 6 miles

Difficulity: Easy

Start point: 0930 at County Hall or 1030 at the car park in Llanboidy.

Ewenny Priory - Sun 29th Aug

On Sunday Bob will be leading us on a walk in resplendent Vale of Glamorgan countryside. We'll be setting off from the car park at Dunraven Bay and then following a trail that includes some impressive limestone cliffs, gentle green hills, and Ewenny Priory - probably the best example of a Norman church anywhere in Wales. We'll also have the chance to go down to Dunraven Bay itself for a bit of coast.

Distance: 9.5 miles

Difficulty: Easy/moderate

Caerphilly Woodland and Mountain Walk - Saturday 7th August

Due to unexpected circumstances, Jon is no longer able to lead the Caerphilly walk on Saturday. We wish Jon all the best at what must be a difficult time, and hope that he can come back on regular walks with us in the future.

In the meantime Emyr has kindly agreed to lead a walk in the Caerphilly area similar to the one Jon had planned. Here are the details:

From Caerphilly Woodland Car Park the route sets out off over mountains and through woodland including Mynydd Rudry, and Caerphilly Mountain - which affords impressive views of Caerphilly, the Valleys and beyond. There is a stretch of path which follows the line of the old Rhymney Valley Railway, and - of course - the option of a pub stop.

Distance: 7-8 miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Meeting: County Hall at 0930, or the start point (Caerphilly Woodland Car Park - GR 172864) at 1030. Please call Emyr if you plan to meet at the start point.

Dave's Beacons Wildcamp

Being the intrepid adventurer he is, Dave is planning an wildcamp in the Beacons (date TBC, dependent on interest and preferences). The plan is to do two days of walking with a night's camping.

This sounds like a good opportunity for a more serious trek than we could manage on a single daywalk, with some camaraderie and Dave's unique style of fireside humour thrown in for good measure! :-) If this appeals to you get in touch with Dave on 07828 621311.

Sirhowy Valley - Sunday 1st August

This weekend's walk heads into uncharted TT territory near Newport. Christian will lead us along a former railway trail and riverside path running through the woodland of the Sirhowy Valley. The walk hits the lofty heights of the Mynydd y Grug before returning to the start point along a picturesque track between ancient hedges.

Distance: 8 miles

Difficulty: moderate / strenuous (there is quite a long incline for a few miles)

Sunday 25th July 2010 - Birchgrove and Neath Abbey

Graham leads this walk which sees us exploring Mynydd Drummau - the hillside between Neath and Swansea. It is a figure of eight walk starting at Neath Abbey and passing through the outskirts of Birchgrove and Glais.

Features of interest: Absoluntely stunning views over Swansea and Neath valleys and Swansea Bay, woodland nature reserve, remains of iron works and a Cistercian Monastery.

Distance: 8.5 miles

Difficulty: Moderate. One very steep climb but otherwise fairly gentle gradients

Fan Hir Walk - Eastern Brecon Beacons - Sat 17th July

It's another Dave special! This time Dave leads a challenging but rewarding walk in the Eastern Brecon Beacons, starting from near the Tafarn-y-Garreg pub and climbing up to the Llyn y Fan Fawr and Llyn Fan Fach lakes, Waun Lefryth, and Fan Brycheiniog. The route includes a 6 mile elevated ridge walk with expansive views over the eastern Beacons. Note the earlier start time!

Distance: 14 Miles

Difficulty: Strenuous

Meeting: 0900 at County Hall, or 1015 at the carpark opposite Tafarn-y-Garreg on the A4067. Note we are starting 30 mins earlier than usual due to the longer-than-usual walk distance. Please call Dave if you plan to meet at the walk start point.

Beach BBQ at Oxwich - Sun 18th July

It's the time of year for relaxing on the beach with some BBQ fayre. On Sunday 18th July, the TT's will be pitching up on Oxwich Bay with BBQs (and hopefully some stuff to cook on 'em) at 1pm. I thought the easiest way of doing it would be for people to bring their own BBQs and food - organising themselves in smaller groups as desired.

Caroline's Leaving/Moving Do! - Friday 30th July

Caroline is upping sticks in Swansea and moving to the wilds of Carmarthenshire. Although we'll be sorry to see her go, the TTs wish her all the very best in her new location.

To mark the occasion and give Caroline the send-off she deserves, Lindsey is organising a leaving do on Friday 30th July. We'll be meeting at the Westbourne pub on Bryn-y-Mor Road at 1930 on the Friday, and then going for food later (maybe a curry nearby).

Caswell Evening Walk - Thursday 1st July

Bob leads us on a short walk taking in Bishops wood, Brandy Cove and Caswell bay, followed by an opportunity to sample the best beer in the area at the Joiners Arms after the walk.

Brecon Canal Walk - Sunday 4th July

The lovely Bob leads us again, this time in Brecon! Bob reports this is a very easy walk although eight miles long, and if the weather stays dry sandals will be okay. Much time is spent walking along the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal or the River Usk - both of which are very flat. The walk takes in part of the Usk Valley Walk, Taff Trail, and the Three Rivers Ride and there's a very pleasant country pub in the middle of the walk!

Distance: 8 miles

Difficulty: Easy

Pembrokeshire Coastal Walk from St. Davids - Sun 27th June

There can be few finer coastal walks than this one! From St. Davids we'll follow an outstandingly wild, beautiful and lonely stretch of coastline, affording views out towards Ramsey Sound, and if we're lucky of some dolphins or seals too!

Emyr leads the way. Note that as this walk will take a bit longer to get to, we'll be leaving County Hall at 900 instead of the usual 930.

Distance: 9 Miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Meeting: 900 at County Hall, or 1030 at the Start Point (the car park near St. David's Cathedral). If you plan to go straight to the start point please call Emyr first.

Other Updates

Remember it's our regular pub night at the Brunswick this Thursday - 24th June. As always, all welcome to drop in for a drink and a chat - members old and new, come one come all!

Dave still has a few spaces left on the Pembrokeshire weekend away (Fri 9th to Sun 11th of July). This trip includes some fabulous walking around the Pembs Coastal Path (though not the same route as above!), and an optional boat trip to Skomer Island. Carmarthen Fan - Sunday 13th June - CANCELLED

Doug sends his apologies, but being the popular chap he is, he's accidently double booked himself and needs to be elsewhere next Sunday! Not such a great advert for his super duper iphone, stick to a paper diary Doug it's far easier!! I'm sure this walk will be added to the next programme for us all to enjoy.

But all is not lost..............

Gower Gallop - Saturday 12th June

Don't panic, I know Emyr's the leader but he's obviously still recovering from his epic bike ride and so has opted for the shortest route of 12 miles!!

To allow time for registration Emyr need's everyone to be at the Sports Pavillion in Pennard at 8.30am!! It should be a great walk, please give Emyr a call on 07846879210 for more details and to confirm attendence.

Pub night - Thursdsay 10th June

It's the Tawe Trekkers regular pub night in the Brunswick from 8pm this week!

There's a lot going on next weekend with a camping trip and a walk on the Saturday and Sunday. If you're feeling very energetic it is technically possible to do everything; there will be a prize/s for anyone who does the camping and both walks!

For some reason my computer/the blogging website is not letting me upload photos this week, which is a shame because both walks are in particularly beautiful locations. If you want to have a look though just do a Google search on either location.

Walk and Camping at Llanthony Priory - Fri 4th/Sat 5th June

The ruin of the Augustinian Llanthony Priory nestles in the secluded and idyllic Vale of Ewyas which is prime territory for walking. On Friday and Saturday nights Dave will be hosting a camping trip at the Priory, and on Saturday - leading a 17 mile walk from the Priory around the Vale of Ewyas. Although the 17-miler may sound like a long trek, Dave will consider putting on a shorter walk (but this will be dependent on demand).

The option is there to camp one or both nights (the campsite is very cheap at £3 per night!), or to just go up for the walk.

Caerfanell Horseshoe Walk - Sun 6th June

This walk encapsulates every sort of landscape found in the Brecon Beacons. Perhaps its most notable attraction is the superb skyline vistas on view around the ridges of the Caerfanell Valley. The walk starts by climbing steeply on to an impressive peak and then stays at an elevated position to give way to a range of stunning elevated views across the National Park. On the way we pass the wreckage of a Canadian bomber which crashed on a training flight in 1942 (killing all crew on board). We descend back to the start point through sumptuous wooded glades riven with waterfalls.

Distance: 6 miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Meeting: 0930 at County Hall or 1030 at the start point; the carpark on the road between the Pontsticill and Talybont reservoirs - GR056175.

Bob leads us on a walk that takes us through the rolling countryside of the Vale of Glamorgan and a visit to Beaupre Castle which was featured in Doctor Who.

Pembrokeshire & Skomer weekend - 9th - 11th July

The cost of Dave's Pem's weekend will be £36 for the hostel accommodation and £17 for the boat trip to Skomer. We'll be staying at the hostel on Friday 9th July and Saturday 10th July. On both Saturday and Sunday there will be 10 mile walks along the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. We will start these walks at Broadhaven and on one day there will be a boat trip to Skomer island.

Sunday 23rd May 2010 - Blaenavon/The Iron Mountain Trail

A few words from your walk leader, Emyr (or his guide book!)

The Iron Mountain Trail is a unique opportunity to explore the wonderful landscape of this World Heritage Site - 'one of the finest surviving examples in the world of a landscape created by coal mining and iron making' - which is situated between the towns of Blaenavon and Abergavenny in the South-West corner of the Brecon Beacons National Park. This spectacular trail follows former tramways, inclines and footpaths linking many of the historic features which make this landscape of world significance.

Starting from Pen-fford-goch Pond Car Park (locally known as Keeper's pond) at SO 254 197. The route follows tram roads, ancient tunnels, the punchbowl (woodlands trust reserve) and Blorenge mountain. Dogs welcome!

Length: 7 miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Meeting point: 0930 at County Hall car park.

Scurlage and Knelston - Sunday May 16th

This walk explores some of the lesser known footpaths and byways of Western Gower. Starting in Reynoldston, this circular route takes in the villages of Berry, Horton, Scurlage and Knelston. We'll walk through pleasant farmland and woodland rich in spring flowers and birdsong. There is a fine sea view at Horton and potential for an ice cream or coffee stop. Other features of interest include historic quarries, lime kilns and ponds.

In general the gradients on this walk are very benign but there is some uneven ground and plenty of styles to cross. Dogs are welcome but there are lots of sheep, cattle and horses throughout, so canine companions need to be on a lead for the majority of the walk.

Difficulty: Easy/Moderate

Distance: 8.5 Miles

Night Out - Friday 14th May

It's going to be a very sociable week this week!

Thirdly we have a Tawe Trekkers night out on Friday. We'll be meeting at the Pumphouse bar in Swansea Marina from about 7.30 (pm, obviously). Should be a good craic; Chris Price is even planning on coming down from the Midlands! As I've said, I haven't made any arrangements for food (as the focus is expected to be on liquid refreshment), so maybe best to grab a bite before we meet, or bar meals are available at the Pumphouse on request.

Melincourt (Upper Neath Valley) - REVISED WALK from Original Programme

Sun 9th May

The walk on Sunday 9th May has been revised since the ongoing problem with paths through someone’s garden hasn’t been resolved. But the new walk still goes through someone’s garden so you won’t miss that experience! The walk starts from the car park near Melincourt Falls and takes in forests, farmland and open moor with a close-up view of some wind turbines. The walk is moderate which means that you need to wear good boots and be prepared for a couple of steep uphills – but it is well within the capabilities of the vast majority of the group. It’s just less than 8 miles long with ascent of about 600 metres. There will be lots of lambs on much of the route so dogs must be under close control.

Meet at 9.30 at Swansea Council Offices car park or 10:00 at Melincourt Falls car park (SN 821 020) on the B4434. Please let me know if you are going there directly. Further details from Robert (07981 963 681)

Kilvey Evening Walk - Thurs 22nd April

Bob is leading a walk with a difference on Thursday. A jaunt up Kilvey Hill at the novel (for us) time of 7.30 on a week day evening.

We'll meet at the Ship Inn in St. Thomas at 19.30, then walk along the Tawe before climbing the 210 metre ascent to the top of Kilvey Hill. This vantage point really is one of the best places to get great high-level views of Swansea Bay and Mumbles.
After the walk there'll be a chance to drink at the Ship Inn afterwards.

It's going to be rambling-themed fancy dress, so please come suitably-attired in bobble hats, walking boots and waterproofs. Any people not wearing these items will not be allowed to take part in the event.

Tawe Trekkers Forest of Dean Weekend - 16th to 18th April

The Forest of Dean trip is next weekend!

If you're stuck for a lift, or have spare space in your car and are able to take someone, please call me, Doug on 07766652837, preferably early on this week. I can then make sure everyone's ok for transport.

Please ensure you bring a sleeping bag and towel.

People will obviously be leaving and arriving at various times on the Friday, but the plan is to have food at the pub where we're staying at about 7:30 on the Friday night (and Saturday night).

Saturday's Walk

On Saturday I'm planning a walk from Goodrich Castle (3-4 miles from the pub/bunkhouse). We'll walk from Goodrich Castle, and follow a loop along the banks of the River Wye, passing below Coldwell Rocks and the great cliff of Symonds Yat along the way. The walk is 8.5 miles long but is fairly flat so no strenuous climbs!

Sunday's Walk

On the Sunday I've got a walk lined-up which starts at the bunkhouse and follows a route through Astonbridgehill Enclosure (an area of attractive woodland) and Ruardean Hill, where we can get a good view across the Wye Valley to the Malverns and Black Mountains. This walk is 6 miles long.

Night Out - 7th May?

It's dawned that it has been a while since our last night out; I don't think we've met socially as a club (outside the Brunswick) since Christmas or New Year.

Could I suggest then that we meet for a drink at the Pumphouse (in Swansea Marina) at 8pm on Friday 7th May? Hopefully this will be an opportunity for people to catch up with each other, and a bit of social consolidation for the group!

The date/venue is only provisional at this stage so please get back to me if you can't do this date and we will aim to send out confirmation with the next newsletter.

Ramblers Association Membership - No more Mr. Nice Guy!

Although people who walk with the Tawe Trekkers have received messages on this subject before, we still have a problem with people not taking out Ramblers membership. This is not going down well with the Ramblers!

If you walk with the Tawe Trekkers, you need to join the Ramblers Association to become a valid member. (Those new to the group can try two or three walks without membership, but thereafter are required to join.)

If you are a walk leader or on the Committee then it is a statutory requirement that you are a member!

Other clubs will not let people walk with them if they don't have a valid membership. We have taken a more laid back approach (maybe that's our problem!), but if the problem persists in the TTs then we will be forced to consider similar measures soon!

If you don't have a membership then please take one out as soon as possible, preferably before your next walk. You can join easily at www.ramblers.org.uk, remember to state your local Group as Tawe Trekkers.

There are concessionary rates and help available for those who think they will have difficulty paying the £30 per year.

I don't want to have a go at anyone, and I'll concede that as Chairperson I'm not entirely blameless for letting it get into this situation in the first place!! However, if you could cooperate with us on this one and get your membership sorted out ASAP then it would be much appreciated.

Foel Fraith - Black Mountain - Sun 11th April - CHANGE TO WALK ORIGINALLY ADVERTISED

Originally we were going to be going to Llanthony Priory with Emyr on this date, but he's not able to do this anymore due to a wedding that he is required to attend (not his own though...yet!).

Fear not though, as I'll be leading a walk in the Black Mountain instead. It's also easier (and closer) than the walk originally advertised, so hopefully it will tempt a few people out on the Sunday.

The route begins from a point about 5km north of Brynamman, and scales the peaks of Cefyn y Truman and Foel Fraith. There's nothing overly strenuous involved, but be prepared for a moderate climb and some potentially boggy ground. Despite that it's a lovely area for a good range of views of the Black Mountain.

Distance: 5.5 Miles

Meeting: 930 at County Hall, or 1010 at the carpark/lay by north of Brynamman on the A4069.

Sunday 4th April - Fan Fawr and the Ystradfellte Reservoir

On Sunday Doug will lead us on a walk up to the peak of Fan Fawr and then on a full circuit around the Ystradfellte Reservoir. This part of the Brecon Beacons affords us some isolated and grand scenery. It's a lesser-trodden region than the Pen-y-Fan side of the valley on the other side of the A470, but that's a good thing as we will be able to revel in its sense of wilderness! Distance-wise it's longer than our average trek, and there's a couple of steep climbs too, so the walk is rated as 'strenuous'. The rewards, however, will be well worth the exertion!

Meeting: 930 at County Hall or 1030 at the start point opposite Storey Arms (call Doug if you plan to go straight to the start point!)

Distance: 10 miles approx

Difficulty: Strenuous
